Save your money and sanity: buy an i7+ instead
Update: The performance of this robot has only gotten worse. We have renamed it "Marvin", after the robot in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. "Marvin is the failed prototype of Sirius Cybernetics GPP (Genuine People Personalities) programme and due to unresolved flaws in his programming he is stuck with the intelligence to do great things but the will and drive to do very little." Fitting.---We own two iRobot i7+s and previously a 960. We recently acquired the s9+, hoping it would help more with our cat allergies and my cleanliness OCD. Our experience:0) The s9 is slightly smaller than the i7, so it fits a little better under furniture. [GOOD]1) The s9 top load bin and filter design is much improved over the i7+. It is much easier to get to and change. We love this new design. BRAVO! [GREAT]2) The s9 maps and covers well. So does the i7. [GREAT]3) The s9 battery capacity is poor for large surface areas. It takes about 4-4.5 hours to do our main floor because it has to stop and recharge for almost 1.5 hours during the cleaning cycle. It's a slight improvement on the i7+. [NEEDS IMPROVEMENT]4) The s9 traverses between hardwood and thick rugs with ease (note: we have NO rugs with fringe edges). It automatically increases the suction when it detects it's on a rug. [GOOD]5) The s9 is great at picking up fine cat hair on hardwood floors. So is the i7. [GOOD]6) The s9 performs the same with fine cat hair on rugs as does the i7. Even with spot clean and setting the s9 to the highest level of suction, it goes round and round and doesn't pick anything up. If we're lucky, it rolls the cat hair into strings that we then have to manually pick up. [NEEDS SERIOUS IMPROVEMENT]7) The s9 has a much larger filter than does the i7. We cannot believe the amount of fine grained stuff we collect in this thing (all I have to do is clean the filter in front of someone, and they immediately want to buy one!) I'm not sure that it does better than the i7, however. I'd have to do a comparison test. [GREAT]8) The s9 is advertised to have an "anti-allergen" feature, but this seems to be nothing more than the filter system, which the i7 has. Both have "high-efficiency HEPA-style (not HEPA) filters which capture 99% of dirt and filter down to 10 microns." True-HEPA which filters down to 0.3 microns. [NEEDS IMPROVEMENT -- as in, REAL HEPA filters]9) The s9 brushes curl under and sheer off entirely, easily and frequently. The i7 brushes are champs. [UNACCEPTABLE]10) The s9 rubber rollers seem to be not be as durable as the i7 brushes. They easily are cut/cracked. [NEEDS IMPROVEMENT]11) The s9 frequently gets stuck. Badly. It apparently thinks it needs to climb the legs on our dining room table and gets "stuck on a cliff". Or it goes between the center legs, gets wedged, and keeps trying to pull through to the point that it takes force to pull it back out. Really? We've started referring to the s9 as "Jarvis, the stupid robot." [UNACCEPTABLE]Rating: C--Overall: we are really REALLY disappointed in the s9+. It was advertised as being great for pet hair and allergies, and yet, it's really not unless the hair is on hardwood. In all, we simply do not see $400 of added value in the s9+. Save your money and buy the i7+.UPDATE: I have to give iRobot customer support a big thumbs up. They replaced the original unit at no cost whatsoever. Given that, I'm increasing the rating by one star. I will also share the following Roomba S9 experiment and results.---Research questions:* Is a Roomba S9+ smart enough to evade pets?* Is a Roomba S9+ smart enough to evade pet "droppings"?* Is a Roomba S9+ strong enough to suck in a cat's tail? (If the Q1 answer is 'no', then this question is moot.)Experiment methodology: * Acquire 2 long haired cats with different personalities. One must be very skittish, and the other head strong and stubborn.* Allow cats to get familiar with the environment and claim it as their kingdoms. * Program a Roomba S9+ to automatically run three times per day, each in different parts of the house. This is important because, for example, we want to determine if dropping location makes any difference (e.g., near the litter box vs. in the middle of the carpet).* Let the Roomba run for months on end and observe.Data to collect:* Contents of home base and S9 waste bins.* Debris on S9 (particularly in the rollers and wheels).* Video of cat behavior. Results:* Is a Roomba S9+ smart enough to evade pets? NO. The S9 runs right into pets. And in fact, cats are able to jump on its back and take a free ride around the house.* Is a Roomba S9+ smart enough to evade pet "droppings"? NO. Not only didn’t the S9 evade the droppings, but it coated the wheels, rollers, and side brush and then ingested the droppings and completely covered the circuit board. A through cleaning resulted in months of circuit board errors, causing it to undock and then die in the middle of the floor. This delayed the experiment. Another S9 was acquired to complete the experiment.* Is a Roomba S9+ strong enough to suck in a cat's tail? YES. If an S9 makes contact with a cat's tail, it will promptly suck it up into the rollers, which will set the cat off. An (probably not so much) unexpected result is that attempts to free the cat from the Roomba should be done with care, perhaps wearing oven mitts and a catcher's mask. Updating flawed methodology that did not take human safety into account.

Almost a year ago, after trying 3 different vacuums from their competition, a coworker who used his iRobot for the last 5 years suggested I buy one, so I did. Today I am absolutely bummed out. I ordered my iRobot almost a year ago and it has officially died. I was so happy with the my purchase, it was amazing, fantastic, and everything I had hoped it would be. I must have been responsible for at least a dozen of my coworkers and friends buying one over the last year. They always say that if you build a good product, the word of mouth will pay you back 100x over. As a disabled Army veteran, I can tell you that this product made my life so much easier. This was a fantastic product while it lasted. I really was expecting it to last for more than a year but about two months ago it began to make really loud noises and having power and charging issues. I used only iRobot accessories so I know that my parts were legit. Today, I have to spend more time trying to get it to work than it is worth. With that being said, it still did an amazing job, ran silently, without a care in the world and with only general maintenance was what I wanted. (I even named it and had my Alexa run it when I way away.) If I could afford to purchase another one, I wouldn't hesitate, it would still be the one I choose. I am sure that mine was just one of those rare duds.

First this thing is loud. The rubber scrapers/rollers squeak on our floors. It's pretty annoying, I even use it a my alarm clock now.

While it is loud when cleaning your floors there is nothing that compares to when it empties into the base. High pitched vacuum noise as loud or louder than my shop vacuum. I am not exaggerating.

I had a $180 Shark that was dumb as a rock, banged hard into everything, not as loud and cleaned as well. This is supposed to replace the Shark.

On the Seventh day...

After it woke me up it vacuumed for a bit and did it's 'I stopped vacuuming for a reason' beep. I had some things to do so I checked the app. It showed it was still cleaning. But it wasn't.

Eventually I remembered it exists and found it. I pressed clean and it would not resume. So I put it on the dock and it still showed it was cleaning as it was charging.

Came back and the Roomba didnt respond to either the app nor the 'clean' button.

It needed a reboot. Held the 'clean' button for 20 seconds and it rebooted. Still nothing. I waited again. Pressed the 'clean' button again and it finally started to reboot. It told me it had an error 15, some internal error it was able to clear on its own. But no clue what it was.

Finally it starts working again and I set it to clean again.

Seven days and this thing already had an internal error. $600 gamble if this will happen again. I'm going to exchange this one. I don't feel like dealing with a deteriorating unit which may fail outside of the 30 day azon return period and get a refurbished unit from a warranty return with iRobot.

Update: Since I posted I still ran the vacuum to see if things that happened were a fluke. Maybe my expectations were too high? I've come to find out they really aren't.

So, the vacuum tried to 'mount' the dock. No, not in the I'm going home to charge and empty my bag. Nope, it decided to hump the dock at an approach angle of 45°, then after a minute of rocking up and down it backed off, spun around 360° and started it again. This happened 4-5 times before I picked it up and placed it away from the dock.

Something else I've learned is that everytime something gets stuck in the brushes I need to clear the brushes and then put it back on the dock to 'reset' it. Pressing the clean button will not get it to start cleaning again. It just toots its cheery little tune and sits there. I did not have this problem with the Shark that the Roomba replaced.

The worst part of it is that after being on the dock it will not pick up the job where it left off. So half the floor is clean. If I set it to clean again it starts with cleaning the area it has already cleaned.

I run this vacuum once a day. I can count on my hand the number of days that this vacuum has run trouble free for me and still have 3 fingers left over.

Update, again (2 months): Do not buy this junk. It literally said it was stuck on a ledge... In the middle of our hardwood floor. Nothing around it.

Now it has taken to trying to empty it's bin before it starts a job, repeatedly. Today it was 3 times in succession before I pulled it off it's dock. What programming says keep emptying your bin multiple times before you start a job. And the vacuum's bin is already empty. Who programs these things?

------------

Update 11/24/23

It is officially no longer working. It had a fault stating that the bumper was jammed and to tap it a few times to loosen it. I tapped it, and tapped it and tapped it some more. No change. Put it on the dock. No change. Rebooted it. No change. Tapped it again. No change. Rebooted it again. Yes, finally change. It moved a few feet from the dock and spun in a circle for about a minute and then the error of stuck bumper is back.

I give up.

I will continue to update all the new faults I discover until Amazon makes it unable for me to edit this review.

Works great for me. Just changed the bag and filter after nearly three months of use. I have hardwood floors with rugs. Does a good job on both. If you've ever had all hardwoods or other hard floors, you know what a pain it can be to to keep the dust bunnies at bay. The Roomba works great for this. Also does a good job keeping up with the litter box. Fortunately our cat actually keeps his waste in the box and the robot has no problem keeping up with the track out each day. Having the robot has really kept the overall dust down in the entire house. I see quite a few review with complaints from people that I don't think have realistic expectations... even for a robot at this price point. Simply keeping anything off the floor that can tangle like socks or charging cords or shoelaces helps the robot do its job. Even using a regular vacuum would require some simple prep. You can't just run a vacuum over everything. About once every week or two I check the rollers. They are simple to remove with no tools and remove any hair built up at the ends. The mapping feature is great and the robot obeys all of the keep out zones once mapped. It's also nice to have some named areas that you can tell Alexa to have Roomba spot clean when needed. I'm also amazed that the robot doesn't get stuck in the dining table chairs. We have 8 chairs at a 7ft table so it's pretty tight but the robot manages to clean it all.

The bad or less than perfect---

Yes it is loud... it's a freaking vacuum. There is a low noise feature that I haven't even tested. I have the Roomba run routines that I have scheduled for while we are at work/school so noise is not a concern.

It doesn't vacuum close to the sides of the base for some reason.

It occasionally shuts itself in a room if it manages to get behind the door and push it closed.

Sometimes when you ask Alexa to have Roomba vacuum an area, Alexa says that the Roomba is not responding but the robot actually does start vacuuming. Maybe this will be fixed with a skill update. It's not a big deal but a minor annoyance.

I'm happy with the purchase and would recommend to anyone. I've only had it for three months so I can't speak to long term reliability.

5.0 out of 5 stars iRobot Roomba s9+ is excellent
Reviewed in Canada on August 14, 2022

Review one year and a half later:
1) The quality of customer service at iRobot is unequaled. 2) I recently tried another product that was supposed to be the best according to PC Magazine. This other product was finally very disappointing. In particular, iRobot was far superior to make a map and this other brand, which claimed to wash the floor at the same time, still has work to do to fill its promises.
Review when I purchased it:
iRobot Roomba s9+ takes some time to map the floor, and it doesn't always do what we think it should do. My advice is : leave it alone! Let it do its work and clear the place as much as possible. Press the map button, then the 3 dots, then mapping run. Do it at least 3 times (you have to do it at least 3 times). This will take a lot of time (for 1500 sqf). Let it work! Thereafter, this device will work perfectly. I am delighted.
N.B. The first time, I left the chairs and other little things (flower pots) in their place. I was disappointed with the result. The plan wasn't perfect. The second time, I took as many things as possible off the floor and put them somewhere else. After giving an almost perfect floor... I had a perfect plan! If you are demanding with the robot, you must give it what it needs to meet your requirements.

The clean Base is not duel voltage, you will need a converter from 220 - 110 to use.
In the same time, the charging function is working fine without a converter!!

Vacuum works wonders, app works good, clean Dock can be switched on and connect with the robot vacuum only thing is the clean Dock is unable to clear the vacuum. Keep getting error message but roomba services can't help as this roomba isn't bought locally.
