Sony RX0II Tiny and tough. Premium imaging anywhere.

The RX0 II compresses the high-quality imaging technology from the RX-series into an ultra-compact, robust and waterproof body. The ZEISS Tessar T* 24mm1 F4.0 fixed wide-angle lens, paired with the 1” (1.0-type) stacked back-illuminated 15.3MP5 Exmor RS CMOS image sensor and BIONZ X image processor deliver sharp images and incredible 4K video that can be recorded internally. Steady shots with electronic image

stabilization and a convenient LCD that tilts up 180° and down 90° for high and low angles shots – ideal for selfie-shooting and vlogging.

1” Stacked back-illuminated Exmor RS CMOS Sensor

This large 1” (1.0-type) stacked back illuminated Exmor RS image sensor with BIONZ X image processing engine not only enhances efficiency and speed of A/D (analogue to digital) conversion through its stacked structure with more circuit sections; it also realizes super-fast readout speed. Additionally, the back illumination technology increases light collection efficiency and reduces noise in shots taken at up to ISO 12,800.

24mm F4 ZEISS Tessar T lens

The 24mm1 F4 ZEISS Tessar T lens delivers high-resolution images with less image distortion in peripheral areas, despite its wide-angle lens design. Improved minimum focusing distance is 7.9” (20cm), optimal for selfies and close-up shots. Employing 6 elements in 6 groups including 6 aspheric elements - this ZEISS lens intensifies recordings’ contrast and sharpness. Furthermore, you can capture improved images and suppress occurrence of ghosts and flare by using an optional hood8.

Advanced BIONZ X image processing engine

The RX0 II premium lens and sensor are complimented by the high-speed Sony BIONZ X image processing engine that powers conversion of light captured by the sensor, rendering photos and movies with natural details, realism, richer tonal gradations and low noise. Internal 4K recording8 is now possible due to the performance of BIONZ X which has been increased by a factor of about 1.8 compared to the previous RX0. In addition, face and Eye AF speed have been improved along with increased buffer when shooting multiple images continuously.

Internal 4K movie with image stabilization

The RX0 II offers 4K (3840x2160) 24p/30p internal movie recording8with electronic image stabilization and full pixel readout with no pixel binning to collect approximately 1.7 times the amount of data required for 4K video. This oversampling reduces the appearance of moiré and jaggies and delivers smooth, high quality 4K footage with exceptional detail and depth. Using the Sony Imaging Edge mobile application and Movie Edit add-on app, this footage can be transferred to a smartphone, edited, and shared easily across social networks. Even the image stabilization can be enhanced as the Movie Edit add-on app utilizes gyro information captured while shooting. Uncompressed 4K is also available via HDMI output and compatible recording devices.

8 Supplied as a part of VFA-305R1 Filter Adaptor Kit.

Compact robust design

The RX0 II’s extra rigid super duralumin body and ultra-compact dimensions make great shots easier to take even in the toughest situations. Weighing in at only 0.30 lb. and measuring a miniscule 2.375” x 1.625” x 1.1875”, the RX0II is also waterproof2 down to 33 ft (10m) without underwater housing and shockproof3 to impact of drops to the ground from heights up to 6.5 ft. (2m). The highly reliable, robust RX0 II is also crushproof4 under weights up to 200kgf / 440 lbf / 2000N.

2 Waterproof down to 33 ft (10m) without underwater housing. The minimum focusing distance increases underwater, causing angle of view to narrow.

3 When dropped onto plywood that is 5cm/2 in. thick from heights up to 6.5ft. Conforms to MIL-STD-810G 516.7 shock test (U.S. Military Standard).

4 Cannot absolutely protect against damage to or malfunction of, or absolutely ensure waterproof/dustproof/shockproof/crushproof performance of this camera, depending on conditions and circumstances of use.

15.3MP5 up to 16fps continuous shooting

Despite its 15.3MP5 high pixel count, the super-high-speed image sensor boosts readout speed to the extent that the camera can achieve continuous shooting up to 16fps6. This lets you capture moments of fleeting beauty or facial expressions in an instant.

6 In Speed Priority Continuous mode. Focus and exposure settings fixed at first shot

Super Slow Motion

Slow motion video can be captured up to 120fps in HD with sound. Super slow motion7 at frame rates of up to 960/1000fps is available to transform even the most mundane moment into something spectacular. Slow motion shooting at 480/500fps and 240/250fps maintains fine images at nearly HD quality with the choice of Quality Priority mode. End trigger mode lets you capture the decisive moment in super slow motion starting from two or four seconds before the REC button is pressed.

7 Up to 960fps NTSC / 1000fps PAL super slow motion can be recorded. Sound cannot be recorded when shooting slow motion. A Class 10 or higher SDXC or SDHC memory card is required. NTSC/PAL mode is switchable through its menu. Image quality approaches Full HD quality at 240fps NTSC / 250fps PAL in Quality Priority mode.

Advanced video features and mic in jack

Desirable filmic looks are available with Picture Profiles which determine the character of movies by changing basic parameters like chromogenic effects and gradation adjustment. S-Log2 is a proprietary gamma setting from Sony that is invaluable for professionals seeking post-production flexibility, and extends the dynamic range of recording to reduce occurrence of blown-out highlights and black crush. Time code is also included which greatly aids in synchronizing cameras in multi-camera shooting. The RX0 II also features a mini microphone input jack which enhances audio through optional external microphones and a Proxy Recording setting that captures a smaller proxy file for faster sharing and editing.

A creative tool from every angle

Miniature dimensions and all-around versatility maximize your freedom to take and use the RX0 II effortlessly anywhere in creative ways — especially with other RX0 II cameras spread around to shoot from various perspectives. Properly-aligned multiple RX0 II cameras can be used together for creative setups from multi-camera angles, 3D, bullet-time to light-field arrays and even volumetric, thanks to the camera’s minimal symmetric design and synchronized connectivity. On its own or as part of a full-scale multi-camera system, the RX0 II can extend imaginations and open eyes to unprecedented recording possibilities.

    A keeper
I snorkel with this camera every day, it works well for stills. Purchased because of the form factor. Battery life with intermittent usage is great. Power on delay is negligible. I really like the lack of a touch screen as on other cameras transitioning the water surface can trigger the screen. The download software not great and wifi eats the battery, so I pop the memory card. As a consequence after 3 months of use the camera is at Sony due to flooding. I hope that story has a happy ending......(so 4 stars so far). The attached image was taken at about 20ft, is a jpg direct from the camera, not altered except for minor cropping.EDIT: Upped to 5 stars because of Sony's handling of the flooding issue.

I have the Sony RX100 IV which I love and this action camera I believe is based off the same sensor. It takes excellent video and photos, housed in a super strong metal housing. Has very few workable buttons available during use. What I mean is the settings buttons around the display are not included in "workable" because they're so small and need extra attention while the camera is in use. Meaning if you need to make changes during a shoot everything comes to a halt. The LCD is easy to scratch so take care or invest in a good screen protector. Batter life is short so have extra. Takes some getting used to to work and learn the menu. There is NO competition for this camera as far as image quality so if that counts don't waste your time. It's too small to use as a normal travel camera, perhaps as a hidden camera or totally minimalist but for day to day travel it's display is too small and controls too difficult to make quick adjustments.

Love the quality of build, you can literally kick this thing like a football and it won't get crushed or damaged. Sony has built a great durable one piece housing. The sensor is it's key and top positive. The door for the SD card and other options is a bit odd and easy to lose. The cover may be the weakest part of this camera. Love the flip up display but for a camera this size it loses it's advantage.

I’ve seen lots of mixed reviews about this camera and as a pro photographer, I’d like to add my insight.

For starters, this is not a GoPro or a typical action camera. This is a camera that can perform more manual functions than anything like a typical action cam. For example, I shoot real estate properties, and this little guy can shoot bracketed photos in wet weather that I can then edit in photoshop later on. A GoPro can’t do that, nor does it have a sensor large enough to produce the kind of images that this camera can produce.

It does have limitations, but it’s tiny. It’s a trade off. Overall, this is an excellent, compact Sony rig that will give you that “Sony 4k” video look that you cannot get from an action cam. The one inch sensor does fairly well in low light.

I’d say this is a tool for more experienced photographers and videographers. Also, let me correct one thing I keep seeing: you CAN turn the LCD screen back on while shooting. Just press the “enter” button. By default, most small cameras will turn off the screen after about a minute, to save battery life. This one is no exception, but you can turn it right back on if needed, just like a GoPro.

Buy this if you need something small, weatherproof and rugged, with the ability to shoot similarly to an Alpha or RX séries camera.

This camera is great at what it was designed for and a must have pocket camera for the professional photographer. It is rugged and will give you top of the line photos and spectacular video. When using it for vlogging you should definitely invest in a gimbal as the in body stabilization is worthless. This is NOT an action camera. It will however blow any GoPro away with the video and photo quality due to its 1” sensor.

I enjoy the novelty of the RX0 ii, with its tiny form factor and ability to shoot 4k video. The aperture is nice for getting a decent background blur effect, and the focal length is wide enough for a blog style approach. Having the back panel flip out and around is great for that as well. The sound is fine for voice, and the battery life is good for shooting short scenes (about an hour, I would estimate). That is a bit limiting, and requires that you pack along some extra batteries or have a plan about your video beforehand.

First off, this little camera takes very good pictures - the lens is of usual, good quality, optics are quite good considering the size, and the form factor is fantastic. That's where it ends.

For an action-cam, it's too limited. Abysmal battery life on its own, and no way to extend the battery life while keeping it waterproof. As a remote/perspective cam it's crippled by the fact that you CAN NOT CONTROL 4K RECORDING OF THIS CAMERA FROM YOUR SMARTPHONE! The "Ctrl f/Smartphone" function is disabled when set to 4K recording, and the only way to enable it is it drop it to FHD recording. But even if you get set it up for 4K recording, the camera will overheat and shut down after 20-25 minutes... just short of the battery giving out.

The limited footage it produces is good. However, it's too limited for me. The waterproof bit is useless if I can't take it snorkeling for a couple of hours without risking salt-water ingress while swapping batteries. I can't set it up as a remote camera, because there's no way to start/stop recording without physically touching the camera - and I can't leave it recording, even with USB power, for extended periods of time, because it will overheat and shut down.

But then, if I want a good camera for short 4K clips, I can just use my phone. For action cams, there are other brands ("pro" or amateur) which have more accessories available, including waterproof housing with extended battery life.

    Disappointed (and returning)

Battery life was kind of low but I ran it on USB power and didn't have any issues over 12 hours of shooting. The app while kind of laggy was great for starting and stopping recording and to allow for manual focusing as well as changing settings based on ambient light. Used in conjunction with a LumeCube I was able to control both remotely and never had to mess with the rig.

2.0 out of 5 stars No continuous auto-focus

It is a video camera, so you'd expect continuous auto-focus (AF-C), but for this camera, you actually have to half-press the shutter to focus, and if subjects move, too bad :-|, misleading for Sony to claim AF-C

2.0 out of 5 stars Falls short as a slow motion camera

I purchased this camera to shoot high frame rate video. I was enticed by the ability to shoot up to 960 FPS. However, the functionality of this feature fell very short of expectations. You cannot simply start and stop recording with the device. Very confusing. Very frustrating. Even after figuring out the confusing record feature, it was extremely difficult to capture the desired motion. I'm sure this camera is great for shooting a vlog. If using for action or slow motion applications, steer clear.
