Good Medium Weight, Not Itchy, Good Quality, Expensive
I bought this base layer bottoms (Size XS for my 5’2” 100 lb frame) to wear on a trip to Utah during December. It replaced a really thin one I’d previously bought at a big-box store that just wasn’t warm enough. I wore it the entire trip under my regular clothes while sightseeing and during snow activities. It’s a nice medium weight with good ‘movability’ although I probably could have done with something even warmer. I didn’t find them itchy. Overall, good quality and comfortable. Very expensive, but I will probably use them for the next 20 years if they hold up.

I’m a size 10-12 (more towards 12) and originally bought a large. They weren’t as tight as I wanted for a base layer, so returned for a medium which fit perfect. I’m 5’1” so of course the length is a little long but not annoyingly so.

I think these pants are more true to size than other wool pants. They are really comfortable and the cut fits nicely around my curves and wide hips. The waist band is thick and doesn’t cut into the body or twist around like others. I just got these yesterday and am wearing them today. I’ve owned a pair of a slightly different style of smart wool’ s merino leggings for about a year and they are still in great condition. I’m glad I purchased these. They are a little pricey but worth it. Hello from southwest Wisconsin!!

Update: I got a second pair because they are great!

I love Smartwool products, and these bottoms are a great base layer. They will keep you warm without inhibiting your range of motion. They're also really soft (unlike the Smartwool 150 which, IMHO, feels like cheap polyester and itches like crazy).

My complaint is with the bootie. I have a curvy butt, and these pull way low in the back around my bottom. I'm 5'7, range from 165-180 pounds, and typically wear a 12/M in pants. I ordered a large in these and they still pulled down in the back. I don't want to size up again for fear that the bottoms won't be as snug as a base layer should be.

I'm keeping these and will wear them, but I'll also try to find a brand that's a little more accommodating to big-bottomed women. But they do what they are supposed to do otherwise, so I'm happy enough.

Update 02-29-24:
I just found out these are so much less expensive on their website than they are here. I've written Smartwool and will update my review once they respond.
I may end up returning these.

Yeah, they are expensive, but I was preparing for a Viking festival I was vending outside at, where I was standing outside, in very cold, wintery Michigan weather, for upwards of 14 hours a day, for 3 days in a row. I was hoping it wouldn't be that cold, but it was. Thankfully, I had ordered these Smartwool thermal long johns on the Try Before You Buy" program. They saved me. I thought I'd be sending them back unused at the end of the weekend. Nope! I'm keeping them.
Yeah, they are expensive, but they are worth every penny I paid. I could see my breath and my face felt freezer burnt, but the only thing that was cold on me were my toes, fingers, and face.
Now I need shoes, gloves, and a mask made of Smartwool.

Really impressed with this brand overall! I also bought a couple of their midweight long sleeves shirts. The wool is soft and breathable but kept me very warm on my Iceland trip. Works great as an under layer or as regular pants. I wore for 5 days straight on my trip before washing and they never held an odor. Kind of hooked on these now and wear pretty regularly. Only complaint about us that the threading had some loose strings on the leggings and both shirts I bought after wearing the first few days. I had to knot and trim them but have not had issues again after doing that. Overall very happy with these. While on the pricy side, I can see myself getting a lot of use out of these for a long time and is worth the investment. Wool is a game changer.

Update after 3 months:
I don't wear these everyday or anything, maybe 2-3 times a week. I just noticed a hole in the inner thigh. The material seems a little thinner since purchase and has a lot of pilling along the seams. They are fitted properly. I wash these infrequently since you don't need to wash wool much at all. I'm really, really bummed about the hole and I thought I would get much more use out of these for the price and brand reputation before they started to fail. Will have to patch. So bummed!
