ARS 7” pruner cut a ¼ “ green dwarf lemon tree branch like butter! No effort at all!It is pricey but worth it. Buy the best and only cry once. You would think “What’s the big deal?” it’s only a ¼ ” branch.I bought inexpensive Fiskars Softgrip Pruner, first time and only time use, it could NOT CUT the SAME green branch, and the Fiskar blade bent, I used both my hands to try to cut it. Fiskar pruner went into the garbage. At the time I thought that is one tough branch. This led me to try the ARS 7" pruner. I have the beginning stages of arthritis, and short thick fingers. So, for me it is a big deal. I will only buy ARS garden cutting tools from now on.

These are razor sharp and make good clean cuts with a minimum of pressure. I have smaller hands and can work longer with these than the V8’s. More comfortable grip. If you have grip issues they are good because a sharp pair require far less pressure than any other brand I tried. I am a professional who uses them daily. There is one caveat to the new ones. For some reason the locking mechanism has a break in period that I don’t remember on my last pair (purchased 14 years ago). It took about to weeks of daily use before it opened and closed smoothly. I only purchased a new pair because I was unable to get a replacement blade for this size. I also purchased the V8’s as replacement blades are available but these are much more comfortable for longer periods of use. The ones I received are the real deal with made in Japan and ARS engraved in them. The blade is razor sharp in a way that knock offs cannot duplicate.

I decided to splurge on a good pair of pruners since I spend a lot of time doing just that this time of year. I live on an acre in Hawaii, on the windward side, where we get 70" of rain/ year. I typically have dozens of 30-50 foot weeds, some of which need to be taken out with a chain saw (if we missed one last season). After reading an article on Amazon extolling the virtues of ARS I decided to try them, and they are easy to use, can be used one handed, do lock and unlock easily, and cut through light=weight stuff pretty easily. When you get up to branches which are 3/4" in diameter you are better off with something else. These did not do as well with thicker or tougher branches as my Cutter, or Felco or even Fiskars (which are seriously light weight pruners). These are a precision instrument, artistically made, noy really good for heavy duty work. I had to put them down and get one of my old pruners to take out half the stuff in my yard, but we do get more serious weeds htan most. I love effectively in tropical rain forest. That said, your milage may vary. They are a joy to use until you encounter something with a tough or thick stem or branch.

These pruners show their quality, from the packaging through long periods of repeated use.

The plastic packaging itself is so clever you may be tempted to keep it. It opens without scissors or torn fingernails--and reseals!

An inspection of the pruners show attention to detail. The rubber grips are integrated into the handle--not an afterthought. And every part is screwed in place, so they can be adjusted or disassembled for maintenance. And they are made for maintenance, as they are made for keeps--replaceable parts, and edges that can be sharpened (though they come lightly oiled and plenty sharp straight from the factory).

The pruners feels substantial, though they are clearly made for smaller hands. The large spring requires a bit of effort to compress, but is made to last (as are all the parts).

Of particular note--especially since this is a complaint of other pruners--is the metal safety latch that holds the blade in place. It won't break, like some plastic latches are prone to. You have to compress the handles completely to make it lock. Once in place, compress them again, and the latch releases the blades. Perfect!

Pricier than some alternatives? Absolutely. But you will want these. And you will be proud to give them as a gift. This is a case where you truly get what you pay for--and then some.

These are so much better than my old pruners. They're comfortable in my hands and work well for pruning and deadheading. My only issue has been the locking mechanism. I had a really hard time with it initially, but it has gotten better with use.

I bought these after doing a google search for a reliable pair of secateurs - and these came well recommended and at a price I could live with. I decided to go with the "for small hands" size, but on retrospect I think I should have bought the regular size as my hands are probably average-sized (...who knew! ) and these feel too small. Packing didn't give any written instructions about how to open them - it requires a fairly strong squeeze which I can see being a problem as I get older (!) as I already have weakness in my hands due to ulnar neuropathy. So far I have used them to prune my roses - work as expected.

Reviewed in Germany on June 7, 2022
