A solid drill, with some battery confusion

A solid drill, with some battery confusion
It's been a long time coming but I finally decided to purchase a higher quality drill/hammerdrill to replace a dead, old Ryobi drill I had for about 15 years. DeWalt has always been a brand I've admired so I decided to get this one to use on a rat-proofing project that involved masonry. So I used it for hammerdrilling, drilling, and driving screws into my exterior walls. It is sooo awesome to move to a proper drill. This think made quick work with all aspects, and was easy to quickly adjust speeds to accommodate what I was doing. The flashlight is a little confusing - I haven't figured out if you can turn it or not (seems like you can just adjust how long it's on for). But the battery life indicator is a nice touch. I'm guessing most people in the market for a drill are already used to the features this class of drill has, but they're very refreshing to me. It's a very powerful, responsive, adjustable dill. And speaking of the battery, I'm still confused on which batteries are supposed to come with this drill. The box, pictures, and description all mention the XR battery. But it came with a battery that does not bear (bare?) the XR logo (it comes with two DCB203 model batteries). See the picture I uploaded. So I reached out to Stanley support via online chat and they were super responsive, telling me they'd send me a replacement XR battery. The battery they're sending is a 4.0 amp hour battery though (DCB204 which has "XR" on it), so I'm starting to wonder if this 2.0 XR battery even exists since I can't find it anywhere, or if there's just a labeling/marketing mixup going on. Anyway, if you run into battery issues Stanley should get you sorted pretty quickly.

This is an absolute must have in my home. I only say that about a very few select items, but this truly is. I have had and used many of brands and types of corded and cordless power tools and this Drill is the only one I will ever need again. First of all, I came from a world of various construction, low voltage and high voltage, to pre upright construction, to finishing work flipping homes, this tool has outshined any other I have used in all of my lines of work over the years. I have used this for quick simple home fixes to big all day long jobs, I've put it to the test, and it has proven to be top notch.

1. This absolutely has enough power to tackle any job. I've used it to pre drill holes for finishing work on bedroom sets, cabinets, etc, it is precise, smooth, and clean, it never misses a beat. I have also used this for setting fixtures in concrete using the Hammer Drill portion and it has the power to tackle the job. I have only used it for 1/2 and 3/4 in Concrete Hammer Drill Bits, but it did the job and lasted for dozens of holes with no problem.
2. The battery life is like no other I have used. DeWalt has always been one of my favorite brands of tools, specifically for their battery life. It outlasts and outshines Rigid, Milwaukee, Makita, you name it, it charges faster, it last longer, and it is always reliable. I encourage you to look into how DeWalt manufactures/assembles their batteries! Most companies, including the other popular brands you see at home Home Depot or Lowes, use a daisy chaining method, meaning Cell 1 links to Cell 2 which links to Cell 3 Etc Etc Etc. So when you use it the battery pack drains Cell 1 then Cell 2 then Cell 3 Etc Etc Etc. When you charge it, it charges the Cells in reverse order and usually ends up not charging every cell in the battery pack fully. DeWalt on the other hand has done something unique by taking the time to do it right. Each cell in the battery pack is connected to the charge/discharge connectors and using technology that allows all of the cells to be used and charged at the same time. When you charge it, each cell is being charge evenly and fully. When you use it, each cell is being drained evenly. This is a major reason for the power, life, and longevity of their batteries, even wear even use.
3. Quality in the parts and manufacturing. DeWalt products just last a lifetime, always have and always will. Shy of spending 2x or 3x as much money on a Festool, DeWalt will always be my #1. You just can't find the same care given to the design, craftsmanship, or parts used to assemble the tool like DeWalt puts into their product.

I originally bought this for 2 purposes - I needed a drill with a larger chuck to support some big drill bits, and also needed something to help drill into masonry for installing fence mounts.

This drill is pretty awesome for both of those purposes. When it grips onto a bit, it grips. It's not coming off. I have to be careful with its power, because even on the lowest setting this thing can easily overdo most jobs if you're not paying attention. I've actually not used it beyond the lowest setting for drilling so far, just haven't needed anything else.

The hammer functionality surprised me with how easy it was to use. Made drilling into stonework super easy.

It has a light, which is nice. I haven't needed it much so far, but I'm sure it would be handy for dark areas. And includes 2 batteries and a charger, and a great case. You literally don't need anything else (other than drill bits I suppose). It's great.

I've grown to like tools and things that make me feel powerful. This drill makes me feel powerful. I like that. I like who this drill makes me: A lean mean hammer-drilling machine.

I did a lot of research on cordless drills and while there were some other attractive options I kept coming back to this one and Dewalt's reputation for great service and I'm very glad I did. I've had the drill almost 3 months and it has performed perfectly so far and I like that even though it is quite powerful it also still is quite compact. Initially thought I had an issue with the charger but it turned out to be user error. Opps but Dewalt service reps answered my calls quickly and were great about it and all is well (turns out you need to push the battery into the charger with some force until it clicks in place. The mere fact that it lights up does not mean you have pushed it into charging position yet until it clicks in:)
