    Product Description

    From the Manufacturer

Rethink the limits of speed, precision, efficiency and versatility in the field. With remarkable enhancements throughout the entire workflow, thrilling new levels of speed, performance and ISO sensitivity and the superior image quality of a Nikon flagship HD-SLR, D4S frees professionals to perform at their peak in whatever conditions their assignments demand. Capture full resolution stills at 11 fps for approx. 200 shots with full AE and AF functionality, noise-free photos and videos up to ISO 25,600 (expandable to a mind-boggling ISO 409,600 equivalent at Hi4) and 1080p Full HD videos with high-fidelity stereo audio. Transfer files 10x faster with new 1000 Base-T (Gigabit) wired LAN, and increase that speed further by shooting a smaller RAW SIZE S format. Think and shoot in ways you may not have believed possible.

    The evolution of a masterpiece.

The course of modern imaging has been forged by the talent and ingenuity of working professionals, but also by the introduction of a few cameras so innovative and forward-thinking, they redefined what's possible. The Nikon D4 has been such a camera. And now D4S proves that a great thing really can get better, with remarkable enhancements throughout the entire workflow, dazzling new levels of speed, performance, ISO sensitivity and, of course, the superior image quality of a Nikon camera.

    Speed and performance

    Enhancements through the entire workflow

How do you make a revolutionary camera better? Improve its speed, precision and efficiency without sacrificing the features that make it exceptional. D4S builds on the success of D4 with 30% faster image processing and substantial energy savings—capture up to 3,020* stills on a single charge—an extended standard ISO range (100-25,600) with enhanced noise reduction, and improved tonal range and smoother gradations. Shoot 11 fps for approx. 200 shots at full resolution with AE and AF functionality. For faster initial subject capture, use five AF sensors as a single focus point with the new Group Area AF setting. Transfer files 10x faster than the D4 with new 1000 Base-T (Gigabit) wired LAN, and increase that speed further by shooting a new smaller RAW SIZE S format. Perform at your peak—D4S will keep up.

    Nikon image quality

    Stunning views of decisive moments

Like its predecessor, the D4, the D4S delivers a level of image quality that elevates the power of any story. An improved 16.2MP FX-format CMOS image sensor is paired with Nikon's spectacular new image-processing engine, EXPEED 4, for truly phenomenal speed and performance in the field. The combination achieves outstanding ISO sensitivity, faithful, vibrant color, natural depth, subtle nuanced tones from pitch black to snow white and smoother gradations in both stills and videos. Nikon's proven 51-point AF system and 3D Color Matrix metering III with a 91,000-pixel RGB sensor provide fast, accurate autofocus and metering. Enhanced Picture Control tone curves deliver more depth and clearer color rendition in "Standard" mode. For viewfinder shooting, a new custom setting lets you toggle Face Detection on and off as the situation requires for improved exposure bias around your subjects. You can even measure White Balance against any point in the frame.

    Nikon flagship ISO performance

    Noise-free shooting from ISO 100 to 25,600

Photographers go where their assignments take them, and this often means working in the high-contrast glare of the midday sun, the low-light at dawn or the poorly illuminated interiors of a sporting venue. Nikon flagship D-SLRs have long been recognized by professionals for their clean performance at high ISO settings, and D4S takes that performance to the next level. With a specially designed 16.2MP FX-format CMOS image sensor engineered to collect more light and render higher image quality plus the power of EXPEED 4, you can shoot sharp photos from ISO 100 all the way up to 25,600. The ISO range can be extended to a mind-boggling ISO 409,600 equivalent at Hi 4 for overcoming the most challenging lighting conditions. Enjoy great flexibility in your approach to fulfilling challenging assignments.

The choice for pros on the go

A camera that works as hard as you do

D4S is designed to keep you shooting wherever the story brings you, even after others have packed their bags for the day. Its increased ISO range means you'll be able to capture brilliant photos and videos in whatever light is available. Enjoy improved ergonomics and operability as well as flagship levels of durability and reliability—key for those who spend all day with a camera around their neck. Select from five image area modes while shooting stills in Live View: FX, DX, 1.5x, 5:4 and 1.2x. A new RAW SIZE S setting allows for shooting 12-bit uncompressed Nikon NEF files that are smaller and more easily manageable—speeding up the entire workflow. When you're racing a deadline at a major event, D4S can transfer images up to 10x faster than previously possible with its 1000 Base-T Ethernet. D4S is the camera for today's working pro.

    A multimedia powerhouse

    Professional video and audio capabilities

Today's stories are being told through stills, video, audio and exciting combinations of each. D4S is a multimedia powerhouse, allowing you to capture stunning and smooth 1080/60p video. Shoot scenes with tremendous depth and sharpness as well as with shallow depth of field or bokeh—and even capture 2MP stills simultaneously while recording video. For video, 2.7x Crop Mode extends the reach of lenses and produces outstanding video quality and detail. D4S adds real-time audio adjustments during recording, selectable sound ranges like Wide Range and Voice Range and improved wind noise reduction on the internal mic. Adjust color settings on the camera's LCD to better match an external monitor. Capture smoother Time Lapse sequences with reduced flicker and improved interval control (up to 9,999 shots), and even simultaneously record to internal CF or the latest high speed XQD cards and an external recording device. Create stories that move us.

Could this be....the G.O.A.T of all cameras?
    5 out of 5 stars
Could this be....the G.O.A.T of all cameras?
Greatest of all Time? I suspect it may be. The performance capabilities of this model are uniquely specified to make it nearly impossible to miss your shot, unless you just have no idea how to use it. At 11 frames per second in broad daylight I sometimes go to catch a bird in flight and within no time I've accidentally taken 30 photos. What's great about that? You quite literally will not and cannot miss a beat of their wings and that coveted photo that you picture in you mind, is most likely now on your memory card! Low light capability is incredible and with the ISO able to reach as far as 25,600 the potential is nearly limitless. I would recommend this camera to any and all who have the funds and need those extra fractions of a second to catch the shot they're looking for. I'd also recommend it to those who just do portraiture and every day photography. The reality is, I use this camera for everything and every situation. Concerts, Landscapes, Nature, Events. Find me a camera that outperforms this beauty and I will give you the keys to my less than valuable car. Cheers!

WOW!!! I have a D800e and, at the time, had the D610. I sold the D610 in order to help the cost of the D4S and I'm sooooooo glad that I did. The D800e is an awesome camera that can hold its own, but when compared to the D4S, it feels like a toy. For one, the fact the D800e really only shoots well up to ISO 6400 feels "limiting" now that the D4S shoots up to ISO 16,000 comfortably. I sort of miss the megapixels going down from 36 to 16 (for cropping), but the far far superior quality of the photos from the D4S wipes that away. It also forces me to get a little better at composition in-camera.

In landscape mode, the grip and feel of the D4S is awesome. Meaty and great to feel. In portrait mode, the grip, for me, doesn't feel as good as the D800e with the Nikon grip (MB-D12). I don't have huge or small hands...just medium hands. The MB-D12 has more of a squared off feel and it really fits into my hand well. The portrait grip on the D4S feels a little thin to me. I don't feel like it'll fall out of my hands but this thinner grip doesn't just fall into my hands like the MB-D12. As a result, I need to take a second to search for the shutter button. It's not a dealbreaker but I know they redesigned the ergonomics and this is one area I found to be different.

The 11fps is freakin AWESOME!!!!!! I'm a prosumer so I do formal weddings, portraits, some sports, pets, etc. but even as a "regular" user, the 11fps is great. We have a Great Dane and the burst mode comes in very handy when we're playing with her. It just goes and goes and goes. The group autofocus is also great. I always use single point focus on my D800e but I'm a group autofocus guy on the D4S. Still center-based but having the slightly larger AF area is really nice. Great feature. My parents had their 50th anniversary recently and they did a cake cutting like in a wedding. I had my SB-910 speedlight and SD-9 battery pack in place while shooting in continuos high mode. I was able to rapid fire and catch the entire sequence which lasted about 12 seconds. All shot in 14-bit RAW and the camera didn't stutter at all. Group autofocus caught everything in focus!

Finally, I'll list just a few other items that I find useful instead of replicating all of the reviews online.

Backlighting: big feature for me! It's a cool teal/blue color but I've shot timelapse sequences at night with the D4S and the backlighting has been great.

Small display on the back: before I had the D4S, I didn't think it was useful. It IS useful. All of your information is right there.

Battery door: this has a push button release that flings the door open as opposed to the manually sliding door on the D800e. It feels better and of higher quality.

Memory Cards: The D4S uses XQD and CF cards. Does it suck that the XQD costs a lot more? Sure. But this is a pro camera and it is FAST. In the end, it's worth it. I usually shoot with the camera writing to both cards and when I import photos into Lightroom, I always use the XQD card as my reference.

No built-in flash: I have two SB-910 speedlights and one SB-700 speedlight. On my D800e I usually use the pop-up flash to wirelessly trigger my speedlights so it's a little bit of a bummer that the D4S doesn't have the built-in flash for convenience. However. I'm fortunate to have 3 flashes so I can "waste" one for triggering the other two flashes. I have PocketWizards (MiniTT and FlexTT5 models) but they aren't currently compatible with the D4S (although a new PocketWizard beta software is on the way)

Built-in viewfinder door: this is a really nice feature. A built-in door to close light off from the viewfinder. It can also protect the viewfinder window and keep dust out.

Overall, this is a wonderful camera and, sadly, my D800e hasn't been used much since I got the D4S. Instill need a 2nd body the D4s is simply a joy to use and makes photography so much fun. It's the camera that has all capabilities in the world so I feel like I can do anything with it and not be limited. If you're on the fence about the D4S, don't be. Just get it because you won't be disappointed. And Amazon offers 30-day returns! Give it a shot!!

Final thought...there are many opinions out there as the D4S being not worth the upgrade. Sure, if you have a D4, the D4S is probably not worth the upgrade. Just like the new D810 that was just announced. I have the D800e and the D810 is absolutely not worth the upgrade. If you're not into a pro-level now, the D4S will be an awesome purchase!

The D4s is a great step up for me. I shoot travel and studio photos and the dual-axis ergonomics really was an unexpected plus. The FX sensor produces flawless images with fine granularity and color balance. I like the format flexibility because I usually know pretty much in advance if the resulting images are headed for smaller head sheets, the web or large color prints. That lets me adjust the capture size and quality to maximize storage and not waste a lot of time in Lightroom or Photoshop dealing with 30 MB images. The pro metal body has already paid off in being able to be banged around and keep on ticking. Be aware that this is not a lightweight camera and that when mated with lenses like the Nikon 70-200mm or the 16-35mm, you are holding significant weight. It's not a D40. I upgraded from my trusty D300s, which is no lightweight either, so the weight was not a big shock for me. If you are considering the D4s and you have one of today's lightweight cameras, make sure you hold the D4s with a representative lense before you plunk down the money. That said, it is not too heavy or cumbersome and it has a very nice feel in your hand. All the controls are where they should be and it all feels natural to me. The large number of features necessarily leads to a layered menu system that can be intimidating to those unfamiliar with the Nikon system. But then again, this is not a camera for a first time buyer or casual user. If that's you, you would be best served with other choices. In the end, great photos are not made with pro cameras, they are made with great glass like the 70-200mm or 16-35mm f/4 and an artist's eye. Don't waste your time or money if you don't understand that simple fact. If you have a limited budget, and who doesn't, invest in the glass and the training/books that will make your a great photographer. The D4s is just the paintbrush. It can't make you a great painter.

Excellent low light performance. With that said, small file sizes leave little room for cropping. Also, there was an issue with the rear display. Upon looking into warranty service, I inspected this camera further to only learn it was a grey market. Returned & purchased the D500 & have been extremely happy since!

Hands down the best camera on the market! Yes theres a D5 but if you want to spend more for the same product minus a few upgrades go ahead. Best runway, action shots are done with this camera and I use the Nikkor 70-200mm FL VR lens shots come out crystal clear and sharp and full of details. The sensor on this is insanely good and YES trumps all cameras in the "media pit" because I can bring down my ISO when others have to raise it to bring in more light because it its too dark for them using Canon Mark III or Mark IV or a Sony none of them come close to the sharpness or clarity in camera and that 11 frames per second MATTERS when you only get 10-15 seconds on a runway to get a shot with a moving subject.

When others are at ISO 800 I am at ISO 400-500 still with F4 do your calculations on how much more details are in the shot. Yes you can shoot 40MP on other cameras but it does not matter when its out of focus or not as sharp and you do not have the speed of the lens and camera on your side. When you are ready to invest in your camera just click buy now and leave the competition in the dust.
