Had to return - several issues with the cutting board.
I filled out a return request on this one about 5 minutes after opening the box.The issues:- The board is supposed to be edge wood, yet one plank is obviously heartwood with a massive knot, as shown. The knot is pitted - a couple of the pits are large enough that they look like somebody stabbed a thumbtack into the knot. This area will accumulate food soil regardless of the surface treatment. Cross-contamination is pretty much guaranteed, not to mention eventual rot, etc.- One plank edge is already starting to split, and this thing is new. More areas for food soil to stick, as well as a sign that the board is likely to come apart at some point.- The entire surface of the board feels rough and not quite finished. Passing a finger over the surface, you can also feel the joints. Boos boards generally have a planed and sanded surface.I've used John Boos boards before, and this one just has so many problems that it might not even be genuine. With that said, I guess there are always going to be a few bad apples in any production run for a product, so if you got a great one, congratulations - but I didn't.The one good thing here is that the return process seems like it's going to be fairly painless, considering that it doesn't ship from Amazon, but from a third-party vendor. I'll reorder and keep my fingers crossed. But if the replacement is in the same condition, I'm tempted to just call a local restaurant supply store and see if I can buy just one board. I don't know if that'll work, as they tend to sell massive orders to restaurants, but we'll see.(Apologies for the shadows in the pics, but that's due to the can lighting placement in the kitchen ceiling being set well back from the counters.)

I got this board to replace some of my plastic cutting boards in an effort to reduce the amount of plastic contacting foods in our home. I already own a large Boo's Block board which is too big for heavy to use for small prep. This is the perfect size for prepping veggies, sliding diced onions onto a pan, etc. It is a simple design with no juice grooves or anything but it is exactly what I was looking for.
Boos block makes great cutting boards but you really need to know a few basic things to get a long life span out of them. Never let them soak in the sink. Dishwashers are an absolute no. Wash after use and allow to dry standing up. I do use the Boos products every once in a blue moon to pamper the boards but honestly, I hardly ever bother. My other board has been going strong for over 4 years with no trouble.

...update...Had it now almost 4 months. On 1 of the edges, there is a slight separation where the pieces are glued together. Main thing on any board is to keep it well oiled. I wash and dry the board immediately after use, and oil well once/month now. If you are not willing to do frequent oiling, do not buy a wood board. They are great, but need to be oiled regularly or they will separate with time. I love the heavy weight of the board. I have very sharp Japanese knives, they are not cutting up the board at all.

Only had it about a month, but so far so good. Nice and thick. This board 1 1/4" thick, the board it replaced eventually warped, it was only 3/4 thick. So worth the extra money to get a thick heavy board that will not move around when cutting. The main thing about any cutting board is to oil it regularly. When you order the board, be sure to order "Block Oil." I like this for regular maintenance of the board. I have tried others, like this oil the best. How often to oil? One brand I saw recommended once/day for the first week...once week for the first month...then once month. This is what I did with this board. However, since the board brand new and of course dry, for the first 7 days I oiled with plain pure mineral oil since you can buy in any drug store for a cheap price. After that, starting using the "Block Oil."
Block Oil - Non Toxic Bamboo and Wood Oil Finish (Natural) This oil hard to find in the stores so recommend you buy it from Amazon same time as the board. We have very sharp Japanese knives, the board is holding up to them. This board on the Test Kitchen recommended list. Worth it so far. Bought this size as it fits nicely in our kitchen cabinet drawer.

i waited a year to write this review because there were so many people complaining of splits and cracks. I have ha no problems and am quite happy with my board. I have kept it dry and haven't exposed it to extreme temperatures. I have used it daily, cleaning immediately and treating it with Mystery Oil when dry. I condition it regularly, I'm not sure I'd need to oil or condition except for sanitary reasons. The board is quite solid and well-made.

Two things to consider with a solid wood product splitting: 1) Where does the split occur? 2) How was the product stored and handled? A split along a seam is manufacture. A split in a piece of wood could be material selection, but is more likely care. That includes the care given during transportation and storage between the manufacturer and your kitchen. A board that has been stored in a humid environment or allowed to get wet may not recover well, or quickly. Buy from a reputable seller. Check packaging for signs of moisture or stress. Allow the board time to acclimate before oiling and using, if it's been transported from a different climate. Be careful about using the board near a range top, where heat can stress the wood if it's wet.

I love my board, will continue to care for it, and expect to see many more years of use from it.

John Boos stand to it's reputation " great product, best quality". Never had a second thought when I bought this chopping board because I knew it will last a lifetime with proper care and attention. And by the way this is my second chopping board from John Boos, my first is 24X18x2.25 inches. I love it and you'll love it too professionals, amateurs and home cooks alike. Little heavy, but that what makes a beautiful, reliable and heavy duty chopping board.

This is by far the best quality chopping board we have had so I am hoping we get many years of use from it. This particular model is the thinnest one listed on Amazon and personally I would not want to have it any thicker as it would become just a bit too heavy and awkward to handle. The same goes for the size and the next one up would be too big for our work surfaces and cupboards,
