A Black Women's History of the United States (ReVisioning History Book 5) Kindle Edition

The award-winning Revisioning American History series continues with this “groundbreaking new history of Black women in the United States” (Ibram X. Kendi)—the perfect companion to An Indigenous People’s History of the United States and An African American and Latinx History of the United States.

An empowering and intersectional history that centers the stories of African American women across 400+ years, showing how they are—and have always been—instrumental in shaping our country.

In centering Black women’s stories, two award-winning historians seek both to empower African American women and to show their allies that Black women’s unique ability to make their own communities while combatting centuries of oppression is an essential component in our continued resistance to systemic racism and sexism. Daina Ramey Berry and Kali Nicole Gross offer an examination and celebration of Black womanhood, beginning with the first African women who arrived in what became the United States to African American women of today.

A Black Women’s History of the United States reaches far beyond a single narrative to showcase Black women’s lives in all their fraught complexities. Berry and Gross prioritize many voices: enslaved women, freedwomen, religious leaders, artists, queer women, activists, and women who lived outside the law. The result is a starting point for exploring Black women’s history and a testament to the beauty, richness, rhythm, tragedy, heartbreak, rage, and enduring love that abounds in the spirit of Black women in communities throughout the nation.

A Black Women’s History of the United States is an extraordinary contribution to our collective understanding of the most profound injustices and equalities, as well as the most committed struggles to realize true justice and equality, that have shaped this nation since its birth. Through the courageous and complex voices of black women, and with deft attention to the lives that black women have led from the earliest moments of conquest and colonialism to the dawn of the twenty-first century, historians Daina Ramey Berry and Kali Gross have utterly upended traditional accounts of the American past in ways most desperately needed in our American present.”

I am still listening to this cd while driving in my car. I have to admit, while not surprised of the abuse, that it's heart wrenching to hear such harsh truths, especially in the early chapters, yet is absolutely a truth that must be told. Told with so much heart, includes wonderful stories of strength, encouragement and survival. I honestly believe this history needs to be taught, not swept under the rug. Comes with two discs in a nice case, and a very pleasant narrating voice to listen to. I also bought the book for my 18yo granddaughter. This history should be known!

This was an informative work. What was concerning was that at times it was extremely repetitive appearing as if they were at a loss for something to say.

This book is rich in history. Introducing readers to stories seldom heard. The stories are heart wrenching, but also inspiring in the broader context of journey through today. Readers are left with the clear understanding that American public education is inadequate in its teachings of American history, especially in recounting the stories of Black people. I learned a great deal in reading this book.

I encourage everyone to add it to their home libraries.

I thoroughly enjoyed this challenging revisioning of American History through the lives of black women that have shaped, prodded and endured America as it is today. The stories related by Professors Berry and Gross provide an overview of incredible paradigms of black women throughout American history, while at the same time providing the depth of narrative to stoke further curiosity and study into the brave, amazing women depicted and others within their orbit. The context, details and layers of community throughout the book lay plain the incredible contributions and sacrifices black women have made to and for this country. I was left inspired and disturbed, and of the resolute view that this book should be required reading for all of us.

The title womens’ stories are told with abundant political and social context for each time period (1619 to nearly present)... so there is an expansive knowledge of history shared. The writing is dense and fascinating. I learned a lot, and am better for knowing and understanding the shared experiences of my country and plight and fortitude of African American citizens and their enslaved ancestors. .
The notes and index sections are thorough, so it is easy to find a story or specific name or fact to refer to again.
I plan to follow these two authors’ past and future writings.
