I used 6 bags of chocolate chips (Ghirardelli: 2 semi-sweet, 2 dark, & 2 milk) with a cup of avocado oil. It was the perfect balance and flowed great! I plugged in machine and set it to heat up while I melted the chips and mixed in the oil. Once it was melted, I added it to the machine and switched it to flow. It was a little gapped for the first minute as it adjusted but then flowed without any breaks in the stream….until towards the end of the night when we used up most of the chocolate. It ran for nearly 9 hours straight without an issue. I could hear the motor but it was not overly loud. My ice machine is louder. Really easy clean up! We will definitely be using this again at future events!

And then I added about a cup of organic coconut oil. I melted all the chocolate and the coconut oil together in the microwave and mixed it until smooth before pouring it in. It worked fantastic and flowed beautifully. So. Much. Fun. We dipped strawberries, banana slices, marshmallows, pineapple cubes, and pound cake cubes all on skewers. Even my husband, who was not on board at all for this purchase, loved it. This is such a special treat for a dessert and it requires hardly any effort compared to baking something. I bought this fountain after doing quite a bit of research on chocolate fountains. It was a great price and I have always trusted the Wilton name. I looked into buying the Wilton melts but omg they are expensive and I wanted cleaner ingredients for my guests. With the help of some of the other reviews here on Amazon I felt confident that I could mix my own chocolate with chocolate chips and oil. This is what I did: I used four 12 ounce bags of the Trader Joe’s semi sweet chocolate chips, two bags of Ghirardelli dark chocolate melting wafers (the red bag) and one cup of chosen foods avocado oil. That cost me $24.34 instead of $40 for the Wilton melts (tjs chocolate chips are $2.99 a bag and the Ghirardelli wafers are $6.19 each at Target, and I already had the avo oil). I realize all that chocolate adds up to be four and a quarter pounds but it worked fine. I’m not a big fan of microwaving chocolate so I set up my double boiler and melted the chocolate in two batches. Once the first batch was done I poured the melted chocolate into a mixing bowl and then melted the second batch, and then added the first batch back in to make sure it was all nice and melted together. I did preheat the fountain for about an hour (as another reviewer suggested). Once I poured the chocolate into fountain and turned it to flow it flowed perfectly. I did all this at about 4:30 and my party started at 6. I turned it off at about 10:30 pm and cleaned it immediately. I really didn’t think the pieces were hard to clean at all. I’d say I do a lot of dishes tho so maybe it’s just no big deal to me!

I will say I was very disappointed with the noise this fountain made. When I first turned it on the house was dead quiet and I thought oh no this sure is annoying. It’s got quite a high pitch noise when it runs, much like an ice cream maker. I was thinking ok well it will be better once I turn the music on. Nope. And then I thought ok it will be better once my 20 guests arrive. Nope. It was annoying the whole time. During the party I was even thinking about how I could create some kind of sound dampening equipment for it lol, because the fountain really did work nicely! It’s just was quite obnoxious.

I hope this review is helpful to some of you! In conclusion I’d say buy at your own risk of being annoyed by the sound of the motor, and don’t waste your money on the Wilton melts. My guests loved it regardless and everyone had a blast with it.

This fountain is really nice. I bought it for use in my wedding. It's really easy to use and a great hit. I don't have any major problems with it, but there are a few things I wanted to put in a review that I would have liked to see in reviews when I was researching this product. Make sure you use 4 pounds of chocolate at one time. We wanted to test out the fountain and the chocolate we bought to make sure we liked it, but we didn't want to use a whole four pounds so we only used two. It works fine, you just won't have enough chocoloate to make the fountain really flow. It never said on the pacakge whether you HAD to use four pounds at once or that the capacity was UP TO four pounds so we wanted to test that out, too. It is best to use four pounds. Also the motor in the fountain is a little noisy and it's a constant noise. It's not terribly loud, but it is there. Clean up isn't too hard with this fountain, either, though it does take some time. You have to turn the fountain off and let the chocolate cool before you can start clean up, so that takes a little bit of time. But you also can't forget about it or let it cool too long or the chocolate will harden and ruin the fountatin. You also can't pour the chocolate down the sink, so you need another method of disposal. The base cannot be submerged in water, so you just wipe out the chocolate with a rag or paper towel. When I cleaned out the plastic fountains peices, I filled the sink with hot, soapy water and soaked them for a little bit before I tried to clean them. That made them easier to clean. This fountain is a really good fountain and I highly recommend it!

Love this fountain. I ordered it for my son’s 9th birthday party and it was a hit with all of our guests. It was easy to set up and use. I used the Wilton chocolate and it melted and tasted great! Highly recommend. One tip is that it is preferable to finish all the chocolate in the fountain and wash right away. It is lots of work to clean if the chocolate cools off too much.
