Barbara A. Res worked directly with Donald Trump for eighteen years on some of his biggest projects and had nearly unlimited access to him. Trump selected Res to be in charge of construction of Trump Tower, his greatest success as a developer. In this insider s look at how the ambitious real estate developer became the most divisive president in recent U.S. history, Res takes us into closed-door meetings, boardrooms, limo rides, and helicopter flights to really understand what makes him tick and shows us why his claim to be a great dealmaker and savvy businessman is just a mirage.

No one with this kind of access to Trump during his formative years as a developer has ever written so completely about who he is away from the cameras. It's no wonder that when the media are looking for someone who really understands Trump, they turn to Res. Candid, personal, and deeply perceptive, Res shines new light on the man whose depravity has put us all and democracy itself in danger.

Includes a 16-page photo insert featuring images from the author's personal collection.

About the Author

Barbara A. Res is frequently interviewed on talk shows as an expert on Donald Trump, having worked with him for eighteen years. Res was first hired by Trump to oversee construction of Trump Tower. She became Executive Vice-President in charge of Development and Construction at the Trump Organization, reporting directly to Donald Trump. This book was a refreshing page turner after a long line of strictly political books. She so captured Trump by showing all sides of him, including the earlier days when he still had little heart. I've had bosses like this, well maybe not THIS far out, but I could relate to the times she kept him in line, quieted him and yet stood up to him. Having lived in NYC in the 1980's I have to admit I enjoyed the memory trip to that glitzy period where the standards were so overblown. I think most of all Barbara Res did America a service by alerting us to some key Trump traits that we see in action every day in the oval office. Her many tales of the times Trump acted out totally "without filter" were right on. A good example is denying he had approved a construction change order and then ranting asnd raving and having a fit and blaming everyone but himself, as well as demolishing those around him in the act and making them feel worthless.. You can relate that behavior right to what is happening today before our eyes. Such deeply ingrained habits are not likely to change and I enjoyed the way the book connected the past and the present. I also have to admit I LOVED seeing the old black & white pictures from the 70's and 80's of Res, Ivana and Trump in their salad days.

This political season, I’ve begun rating Donald Trump books by how dirty I feel after finishing them. The more personal the book is, the more awful it makes me feel. High falutin’ books concerned with policy are okay - if not a little boring - but those books that are down and dirty with all sorts of personal revaluations about Trump and his crew are depressing. However, I enjoy the depressing books far more than the boring ones.

The newest of the lot - sure to be supplanted by the books coming out next Tuesday and every week, ad infintum - is “Tower of Lies”, by Barbara Res. She was the Trump’s manager of construction for many of his most famous building, like The Plaza Hotel and Trump Tower. Beginning working with Trump in the late 1970’s to mid-1990’s, Res’s job included sparring with Trump about problem building details, particularly those which were exacerbated by Trump’s ingrained cheapness and inattention to details. Res writes about Trump and his family in matters of business, which is where she knew him and is best versed in the real Donald Trump. What she writes about a man who has been disgusting to others for his total business life only seems to echo what we’ve known for years about Donald Trump.

Barbara Res’s book is a good look at the Trump we know. No surprises; the Trump nastiness to most women is explored in the context of his businesses. Dirty...

Barbara, who worked closely with Trump for 18 years, shows readers the receipts. She details his business practices and leadership style. If you are an astute study of Trump's presidential style, you will recognize elements in her analysis. You will have witnessed the same as you watched him in action during the past eight years.

I wanted to read this book after I had seen 3 or 4 interviews of the author on news shows. I thought who would know better what our 45th president was really like than someone who worked with him as he got into New York City real estate. I also noticed that while being interviewed she seemed very honest and fair. She is exactly the same in her book. She writes about what he was like in the 70s and 80s before he turned into the narcissistic publicity hound that he is today. She showed that he used to be a person, although a bit flawed, before his baser instincts were constantly encouraged by fame- or power-seeking yes-men, the unusual successful that hebrought on himself by being a constantly lying showman, as well as the failure of anyone to ever hold him accountable for his crimes. I appreciate the efforts she has gone to in trying to make him accountable to the people who elected him.

The book review. There are a ton of books on what makes this man tick. The book pretty much confirms renditions from other authors. Yet, it so desperately lacks are tactics to effectively engage the beast.

On a personal note. Barbara, it's a cop out to end the book with, "So, what are we going to do about it?" The question is what are you going to do about it?

You observed him for eighteen years, certainly, you have telling ideas on how to best address him. And, it's not about exposing him. This book did that, So, share those ideas with the media and reporters, For how the media now treats him is shamefully ineffective. Also, you didn't fall for his tower of lies. Share how you did that with his supporters.

This review was written by someone uniquely situated to judge not only Trump's behavior over time but his competence in a business in which he was touted as an expert. There isn't an ounce of bitterness or prejudice in it, only the kind of matter of factness you'd expect from a dispassionate and competent engineer. By not being deprecating or judgmental, it enables the reader to understand that the myth of the great Trump is merely a facade -- like the illusion created by "The Apprentice." I don't recommend it for staunch Trump supporters who continue to drink the "Kool Aid," because nothing will convince you guys of how dangerous it is to have a flawed individual like this in a leadership position. Don't read this from the perspective of Trump the failed president or the incompetent international leader, just read it to judge his decision making capacity and human relationships in the world of real estate and you will understand his behaviors. Being a New Yorker for 39 of the last 45 years, I came to despise him for his behavior long before he ran for political office, so I admit to a certain prejudice about his character. This is precisely why a dispassionate and non-judgmental work like this is valuable for me; it strips away the flamboyance and doesn't try to disapprove of the character with the type of disgust that half of the country and myself have for this guy.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book reveals what a truly evil and degenerate "man" Trump really is...
Reviewed in Canada on March 6, 2021
If this book doesn't convince someone of just how evil a "man" Trump is, then read Mary Trump's book "Too Much and Never Enough".

These 2 books combined, written by people who were closest to him (Mary is his niece) almost mirror each other in that they both confirm what most rational people knew about Trump. That is, he is a racist, narcissistic, xenophobic, degenerate poor excuse for a "man". How Trump was even elected is beyond me, but thankfully, the good people of the U.S. voted him out of office last November.

This book is a great read and just as enlightening as Mary's book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yet another warning about this monstrous man
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 4, 2021
I have read numerous books about Donald Trump and his monstrous narcissistic personality and this is the best. It is also the most frightening. At the time of writing this review no one has the faintest idea what he will do next to try and hang onto the reins of power. Each action is more depraved than the last.

I’m British, but fear of Donald Trump and what he might do to destroy democracy in the USA and the world has hung over me every day since he won the election in 2016. I cannot see him going quietly on January 20. It is, quite frankly, a terrifying prospect, especially in the midst of a rampant pandemic. God help us all.

Thank you for writing the book, Barbara. I hope this appalling man does not take revenge on you.
