This guide brings Chinese astrology back to its ancient roots, providing all the information you need for understanding one of the world's oldest systems of divination.
The ancient Chinese people developed a sophisticated science of astrology that continues to have profound influence in China today. Rooted in the fundamentals of Taoism, it evolved into a system vastly different from Western astrology. Rather than determining personality by the time of the year in which you are born, in Taoist astrology it is the year itself that determines your character. The years form a twelve-year cycle of signs, each named after an animal. Additionally, your personality depends on which of the five traditional Taoist elements you are born under--water, wood, fire, earth, or metal. This makes for a cycle of sixty unique signs.
Taoist Astrology includes information for each sign's personality, compatibility, child-parent relations, and rising and falling fortunes during the twelve-year cycle. Discussions of yin and yang, Confucianism and Buddhism, Taoist alchemy, and the connection between Taoist astrology and Western astrology give you all the background you need for understanding one of the oldest systems of divination known to humanity.

Taoist Astrology differs from other books on the subject by grounding its concepts in the ancient traditions from which it originated.

"Clear, thorough, and beautifully written, this book will satisfy anyone from the beginner to the most accomplished scholar." ― Seann Xenja, Feng Shui consultant and educator

From the Back Cover

ASTROLOGY "A lucid and penetrating foray into the mysteries of Taoist natural science. The material is presented with a dynamic animism that breathes such life into the characters that they virtually leap from the page. Levitt and Tang have clearly created the reference standard for anyone interested in the profound study of Asian astrology, medicine, and psychology." --John Mini, Chinese medicine practitioner and licensed acupuncturist "Clear, thorough, and beautifully written, this book will satisfy anyone from the beginner to the most accomplished scholar." --Seann Xenja, Feng Shui consultant and educator The ancient Chinese people developed a sophisticated science of astrology that continues to have profound influence in China today. Rooted in the fundamentals of Taoism, which sees life as the play of opposing forces and cycles, it evolved into a system vastly different from Western astrology. In Taoist astrology the year in which you are born determines your character. The years form a cycle of sixty unique signs, each with distinct strengths and weaknesses. Taoist Astrology provides in-depth descriptions of each of the sixty signs and offers important advice for making life decisions. It gives valuable insights into personality, relationships, child-parent dynamics, and rising and falling fortunes. Special sections on yin and yang, Confucianism and Buddhism, and Taoist alchemy return this Chinese tradition to its ancient sources. Explanations of rising signs and of the connection between Taoist astrology and Western astrology give you all the background you need for understanding one of the oldest systems of divination known to mankind. This is the most detailed and accurate source for Taoist astrology. I should know since I'm a practitioner of Taoism. I have been studying Taoism and Taoist astrology for over ten years. Online or offline this is the best resource for learning Taoist astrology. Everything you need to know is in this book. I have just two complaints concerning the dates: 1) There are numerous discrepencies in the starting & ending dates of the years listed in the back of the book. For example - The end date for lunar 2007 (Purple Boar) is listed as 2/6/2008 yet the start date for lunar 2008 (Yellow Rat) is listed as 2/2/2008. That's a five day overlap which is technically impossable. The actual starting date is 2/7/2008, I have the charts to prove it! Hopefully mistakes like these are just type-os. 2) On page 18 Susan Levitt lists solar 1996 as lunar 4694. If you use the traditional Chinese year counting method of counting the reigning years of the eperors, then she is wrong. The actual year is 4693. The reason for the one year discrepency is the reign of the first emperor, who according to LEGEND NOT FACT, took control 8 days prior to the start of the new year. So the modern communist government counts that extra 8 days as one year. I, like many people including historical scolars, believe this story to be nothing more than government propaganda to make everyone think the Chinese calendar is a little older than it really is. The Chinese communist government has been known for pulling stunts like this for decades to make themselves feel superior to the rest of the world. In short, the modern COMMUNIST calendar is wrong and the ancient, traditional Taoist calendar is correct. Which makes this year 2010 (White Tiger) the year 4707 not 4708. Everything else in the book is completely accurate. This is an otherwise excellent book that every student of Taoist/Chinese astrology should have, in fact it should be the only book.

I attended one of Susan's workshops in SF over 20-yrs ago, and purchased her book soon afterwards. I have often referred to her book "Taoist Astrology", both personally and professionally. I am a professional Palmistry and Tarot card reader. Whenever I would be hired for entertainment parties or individual readings I would invariably include a brief reference to Susan Levitt's book to help explain (from another aspect) a person's personality or relationship with another person. -- I once was invited to a party with eight couples present. But one couple was consistently being very 'mean' to each other. Their "Taoist Astrology" showed their ages were 6-yrs. apart and "enemies of each other", BOTH their main signs AND their "double-rising signs"! -- This is definitely a "coffee table" book to have for all. Susan's well-written book provides amazing insight (with a 'chuckle'). I may not have married my first wife--'my worst enemy'--if I would have checked Susan's book, first. I highly recommend "Taoist Astrology".

This book provides a fresh perspective on a subject that is all too often simply regurgitated. Ironically, it does this by teaching the original Taoist philosophy on Chinese Astrology. I enjoyed how it gives a brief, but credible history and origin of "Chinese Astrology." Something that is oft overlooked in many other writings. It also recognizes more than just the well-known inter-triad sign compatibilities by making the reader aware of some other fantastic, but little known Yin-Yang parings. This book could easily replace the vast majority (99%) of other books on the same topic.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in Chinese Astrology.

As a coach and consultant I have been using this book to help my clients (and myself) get a broader view into their lives. It helps to see a big picture, which this book provides. It also has an easy to follow system fir finding information. Instead of searching the web to find often erroneous information, just get this book and save yourself some time and money!

I have many years of self-study in Taoism (Daoism) and have found this book a useful and wonderful aid helping Chi Nei Tsang clients understand their selves in a different way . . . a more spiritual slant then most. I highly recommend.

An ok book, nothing particularly special about it. I find the descriptions of Taoist astrology to be inaccurate compared to Vedic and Western astrology, though the concepts of yin and yang is an important lens to view life through. I read through the book in a couple of days, good for the absolute beginner.

Really interesting to see and match up with the western ideas which often confirm overlap, can be a lighthearted issue or deeper if you want it to be.
