From Martin Dugard, #1 New York Times bestselling coauthor of Bill O'Reilly's Killing series—with more than 12 million copies sold—comes a soaring account of England's desperate fight to fend off German invasion.

Great Britain, summer 1940. The Battle of France is over. The Battle of Britain is about to begin. Adolf Hitler’s powerful armies control Europe. England stands alone against this juggernaut, the whole world knowing it is only a matter of time before Nazi Germany unleashes its military might on the island nation. And in London, a new prime minister named Winston Churchill is determined to defeat the Nazi menace, no matter the costs.

Luckily for Churchill, one quirky Englishman has seen the future. Air Vice-Marshall Hugh Dowding is head of the Royal Air Force Fighter Command. He has spent years preparing his nation's aerial defenses, utilizing the new technology of radar, training hundreds of hand-picked young pilots, and overseeing the design and purchase of the world's most up-to-date fighter aircraft. In time, the names "Spitfire" and "Hurricane" will become iconic, these airplanes synonymous with a David versus Goliath struggle between the RAF and German Luftwaffe. For the first time in history, the battlefield will not be on land or in water but entirely contested in the skies above. Nazi victory depends upon their overwhelming air power, and the fate of not just the British people but all of Western Civilization hinges on a small group of elite pilots stopping this onslaught—a band of brothers who will go down in history as the Few.

Taking London puts the reader inside the action, bringing to life the personal sagas of Churchill, Dowding, and legendary fighter pilots like Peter Townsend, Geoffrey Wellum, Richard Hillary, and American Billy Fiske, all set against the defiant backdrop of wartime London. Told in fast-paced, you-are-there fashion, this third book in the epic Taking series is an indelible portrait of the moment the tide of WWII was turned, and the incredible heroes who made it happen.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Dugard’s achievement is to give a vivid sense of what it was like to fight, even die, in a fighter plane in 1940… Dugard’s accounts of the Battle of Britain, on the ground – the bases, the pubs near the bases, the hospitals – and in the air are transfixing.” —The Cipher Brief

Taking London…highlights the bravery and heroics of the RAF fighter pilots, the British air marshals, the aircraft designer of the Spitfire, and, of course, Winston Churchill, Britain’s wartime leader who, in John Lukacs’ words, saved Western civilization… Dugard writes crisply, with short sentences and vivid descriptions of people and places.” —New York Journal of Books

"Colorful, delightfully evocative, and filled with a cast of some of the greatest characters of the 20th century, Martin Dugard's new book is the closest you can get to London in 1940 without a time machine."
—Garrett M. Graff, New York Times Bestselling author of The Only Plane in the Sky and UFO

As so often is the case with Dugard, I’m pulled into the story, both the personal and professional narrative and his navigation between the two. But not just pulled in, moving forward; but periodically paused, putting the book down to dig deeper, to follow the footnotes or the speeches. Churchill was captivating. Churchill was prescient. I thoroughly enjoyed how Dugard captured and wove together those two aspects of the Prime Minister, both as man and statesman. For example, I read and re-read the peroratio of the “Finest Hour Speech,” moved each time Churchill outlines what has just taken place in the Battle of France, now looking toward what is to become the Battle of Britain. The Battle of Britain is the hinge of the book, looking backward to Churchill’s exceptional foresight, the work of Dowding and others, the sacrifice of the pilots; while looking forward to America’s entry into the war, told through Churchill’s friendship with FDR, and the use of Dugard’s insertion of Murrow’s brave broadcasts to carry that arc of the story. I cannot recommend the book enough.

I think this book is a must read for anyone who is interested in Churchill and the bombing of London during WWII. Not only is the Dugard an amazing story teller, the book is difficult to put down as you read the personal accounts of the men and women who laid down their lives to save Britain from Hitler. Having just visited Churchills bunker in London (a must see by the way), I was fascinated to read more about the man who singularly saved Britain and stopped Hitler in his tracks through sheer will and determination. In fact, I often hear Churchill in the back of my mind when I'm faced with a difficult task: "If you're going through hell, keep going!". No matter how much you know about WWI and Churchill, you will learn something from this book. Highly recommend.

I truly love history and Mr Dugard did a wonderful job of recreating the Battle of Britain.
If you are a fan of history and WWII this is a must read.

"Taking London: Winston Churchill and the Fight to Save Civilization," is the third book in a series written by Martin Dugard and published by the Penguin Group of Dutton. It follows "Taking Paris" and "Taking Berlin" and hews closely to the formula manifestly present in each of its predecessors. This review is predicated upon my examination of an ARC graciously supplied to me by the publisher. While the subtitle here is somewhat grandiose and perhaps a bit misleading, the author does do a superb job of contextualizing the Battle of Britain in much the same way as he did for the Battle for Paris and the Battle of Berlin. Like the earlier texts, "Taking London" is eclectic in terms of its narrative structure with the author focusing tightly on a chronologically centered series of events only loosely tied together. Each chapter focuses in an almost stream of consciousness fashion on one major figure or feature of the developing battle presented almost like a series of vignettes which can be read and enjoyed separately, but which, when examined in the context of the author's overall project, do a magnificent job of developing an overview of what was happening and why. The book's perspective is British, and there is little attempt to present a balanced narrative reflecting the experiences of all of the combatants, but what Dugard manages to accomplish is to humanise the scale of events and use that technique as an entry point to his overall project offering a surprisingly nuanced examination of the large and complex mechanisms of a world war from a variety of personal perspectives, thereby bringing events to life for many readers. This is not detailed or all encompassing military history, but it does offer useful and occasionally startling insights to scholars of this material as well as to the casual reader. Every public and school library should have a copy on hand. The text is both accessible and useful for those who would understand the events under discussion.

Martin Dugard never disappoints! In fact he inspires! (I hope he makes his way back to the Pacific Club to visit and discuss this book with his friends in the Senior Members Book Club!)

The book is very insightful and easy to read. Winston Churchill was a very brave leader at one of the worst times in England's history.

Not a review of the book as a whole so much as a comment on the annoying habit of American and English to use “England” and “English” as synonymous for “Great Britain” and “British.”

The book blurb states: “England stands alone against this juggernaut… Nazi Germany.”

Thrilling stuff, but not true

Great Britain (GB) is made up of Scotland, Wales and England. Add in Northern Ireland and you have the United Kingdom, or UK. People from Scotland, Wales and England (and some parts of Northern Ireland) collectively refer to themselves as “British.” While the Battle of Britain was waged primarily over southern England, it was fought, as the name implies, by and on behalf of the whole country.

Am I just being petty? Not a big deal? Try this…

“Taking France.” A thrilling account of how Scotland and Texas drove the Bavarians out of Normandy in 1944.
Or
“Wales stands alone against this juggernaut… Nazi Germany.”
