About this item

  • 【Matter: All-Round Compatibility】With Matter, users are no longer tied to specific platforms and works with all certified smart home platforms, such as Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Samsung SmartThings. You can control all your smart home devices from a single app, reducing the need for multiple apps for different devices.
  • 【Matter: Smooth LAN Control】All Matter-certified devices in your local area network (LAN) will work smoothly even when your home internet goes offline. Matter allows effective communication directly between devices, without the need for a specific 'forwarding' device. For example, a Matter smart switch or sensor can turn on/off a Matter bulb directly without being connected to a cloud service, or other specific action. Once configured, communication and control between Matter devices can be achieved directly on the local network.
  • 【Matter: Multi-Admin】Matter also allows you to control devices via multiple smart home systems at the same time through its Multi-Admin feature. That means you can turn on your lights from the SmartThings app on a Samsung smartphone, dim them by asking Alexa on an Amazon Echo speaker, and then turn them off from the Apple Home app on an iPad.
  • 【Easy Guided Install】Neutral wire is required for this standard wall plate size WiFi light switch. No need to understand complex switch wiring or master vs auxiliary switch configuration. The Tapo App guides you through easy step by step installation. Need 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connection.
  • 【Voice Control】Enjoy the hands-free convenience of controlling the lights in your home with your voice via Amazon Alexa, or Google Assistant. Perfect for times when your hands are full or entering a dark room.

OK upgrades from my Lutrons - Home Assistant Integrated
Pros:- Quick Matter integration into Home Assistant- Relatively fast response (only about 1 second delay)- Quaint little circle LED for identification in the dark- Nice touch including wire labels and Matter QR code stickers, though it's not clear why they're stickers.- Greater range on the low end of dimming than my old ones (though some of my lights turn off completely due to varying tolerances between bulbs).- I like the contacts used for Live, and the tinned wires for Neutral and Ground. However, neutral really should be solid copper imo.Cons:- Dimmer is not as Linear as I'm used to. Soft on/off occurs in noticeably discrete steps, same with clicking up or down. My old digital dimmers were fully linear.- No double tap to max brightness- Very limited functionality with HA. For instance, you can only command on/off and brightness level. You cannot READ any settings such as if it's on or off, or the current brightness level. You canNeutrals:- These come with cover plates, which is a kind thought, though completely useless for me and probably a majority of people since I only have 1 single switch in my entire house. I bought 6 PAIRS of these dimmers and standard switches, so it would be more logical to include a double decora plate, which is a majority of what I have in the house.- On a couple, I've had to hard reset several times for the initial setup. This may be due to Home Assistant's Matter integration being in Beta, but there seems to be a hiccup between Bluetooth credential transfer and actually integrating.

My only regret is that I didn't buy more of these while the $9 coupon was available! I'm very pleased.

Physical installation was very straightforward for me, with all the terminals and wires well-labeled to avoid confusion. Some have criticized the screw terminals, but I actually found them to make installation easier. Some other smart switches (looking at you, Lutron Caseta) have a bunch of wires coming off the back instead of terminals, which means you've got that much more to try to stuff back into your electrical box. With these switches I was able to leave the drops from the box at the appropriate length and had plenty of room to stuff things back in and install the switches. The housing also seems to be a little bit more compact than others I've tried, which makes getting everything into the box easier as well.

Little piece of advice: Complete your physical install up to putting the switches in the box, but don't put the wall plate on yet. The Matter setup codes are conveniently printed on the front of the switch, but they're completely covered when the wallplate is installed. Turn your breaker on so you can do the network setup, then you can install the wall plate.

The network setup, for me anyway, was a piece of cake. I went into the Alexa app (because these are Matter-enabled, there's no need to use the TP-Link app to set them up. The first one added right away, the second one required me to retry once, but then worked perfectly.

They've been working perfectly so far, my only gripe is that the dimmer turns off my lights before I'd like it to, but I think that's an issue with my bulbs, rather than the switch, since different LED bulbs have different thresholds for dimming. I plan to replace my current bulbs with Edison-style bulbs anyway, so I'll be sure to invest in some with higher compatibility with smart switches when I do.

All in all, I'd recommend these for anyone with matter-enabled smart assistants (which is most of the more recent ones these days). Setup was quick and painless, and even without the coupon they're less than $20 per switch, making them one of the most economical options out there that doesn't require Tuya.

Smaller body than what it replaced. Very welcome in tight boxes. I replaced 2 Sunsmart Digital Timers. They weren't fun to program. That Sunsmart did alter time depending on sun up and sun down. So much easier to use an app! Also, this timer does not care which wires, hot or neutral / load or common, you connect. Both are black. Just connect them. The Sunsmart cared what direction the electrons were going.

I got this to replace my Feit Electric dimmer (the "DIM/WIFI" model). The Feit was better looking, and easier to install, but uses the Tuya app (basically suspected Chinese spyware which isn't always compatible with different smart services) and wasn't Matter-certified. I wanted Matter for better future-proofing. The Feit also did this annoying thing where it was lit up on the panel when off, a sort of standby mode, which wasn't great if you wanted proper darkness. The devices are priced similarly.

The TP-Link (Tapo) dimmer here isn't quite as attractive as the Feit. It uses a weird UI where it looks like an always-on rocker that uses the “down” button for both on and off, has dimming buttons that go horizontal instead of vertical, and has a loud and cheap sound when pressed. This has been true of old TP-Link Kasa products, too. At least it doesn't have branding on it, same as the Feit. Both have a removable, proprietary faceplate that looks fine and snaps on and off. I’m glad that the switch itself doesn’t light up in the dark, as with the Feit (the Tapo has an ever-so-faint WiFi signal circle that isn’t intrusive).

Installing it was also worse than the Feit. The Feit has holes for wires to enter and lock down with screws. This TP-Link has jiggly, finicky little plates that the wires go under, and because the screws can come all the way out, the plates can, too, so you need to pay close attention. The Feit has holes for every wire needed, including extras, while the TP-Link requires (provided) wire nuts for both the Neutral and Ground. Both come with labels, and while the TP-Link labels are clearer they are also much larger and don't stick well.

The Feit has two screw options for attaching to the wall box, whether it’s small or large (I don’t know the standard measurements) and both are metal. The TP-Link has metal if you have a larger box, but plastic for smaller boxes. The smaller option does come with the option to adjust the screw side-to-side (the larger does not), which is useful if your box is not level. However, you need to be careful not to screw it in too hard, as the plastic is very soft and you can screw right through it. I think you could solve this with a couple of cheap metal washers, but it's definitely a design flaw. It's especially problematic if you're relying on the screws to keep the device flush with the wall, which is typical of these devices because they take up much more space than non-smart dimmers and it gets crowded with the cables, necessitating pressure from the screws.

My Google Home recognized the device right away (which was actually kind of annoying because I wanted to set up using Smartthings and the popup was intrusive). I was able to add it via Matter-over-WiFi and my Smartthings V2 hub, and it shows up in my linked Google Home. However, I did have to unlink Smartthings from Google Home, and then reauthorize it (“reconnect” alone did not work). This is a Matter problem, not really a TP-Link or Tapo problem. I had the same issue with my Tapo Matter smart outlet. Hopefully Matter fixes this in the future.

Because this is Matter-over-WiFi, a Thread border hub isn't needed, but I use a hub for tons of other things anyway. This is not a Thread device, so it won't build out any Thread network, but it will still work with Matter if you're OK putting it directly on the WiFi.

So far, it's working as it should. The switch works normally, and I haven't had disconnects. I did have disconnects with the Tapo Matter smart outlet, and those were solved by downloading the Tapo app and upgrading the device firmware, so I did the same preemptively for this dimmer. It's annoying that you have to download the Tapo app to get full functionality, but it's basically standard fare for smart devices at the moment, at least until Matter gets its act together. I just download the proprietary apps, get what I need from them, and delete them, preferring my Smartthings setup for smartphone control, and my Google Home for voice control.

This is a decent dimmer for the price, if you can live with how it looks and installs and the quirks of Matter in Dec 2023. If ever a Matter-over-Thread dimmer is released, and looks at all half-way decent, I’ll probably move to that. For now, this works and gets the Chinese spyware out of my house.

I purchased Legrand Adorne smart switches for my condo and my business up in Denver, back in 2017/18. They were almost 10 times as expensive as these, yet barely worked. So my hopes were set very low when I wanted to add Smart switches to my house in Santa Fe, New Mexico USA. It only took about 15 minutes to install each switch, and they were set up in the app within minutes of them being finished. These are infinitely better than the far more expensive ones I own.

Since buying two sets, I've purchased 20 more switches, all Matter certified. What's really cool, as soon as the switch is turned on, my Samsung Z-Fold 5 immediately detects them as Matter compatible, it's instantaneous. I think that's the Samsung SmartThings app, but I'm not actually sure what was detecting them. I'm now going to replace everything, with Matter certified smart home switches, lights, cameras, you name it, I'm going 100% Matter.

The only downside of these switches is TP-Link does not sell two gang, three gang, or four gang face plates. So you have to buy aftermarket ones. I wish they would make the face plates, because they help line up the switches perfectly when they snap directly to the switch rather than the mounting plate used on third party screwless faceplates. That is my one and only gripe, so they should fix that, it would definitely be a profit center for them.
