The Silent Patient Kindle Edition

**THE INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER**

"An unforgettable—and Hollywood-bound—new thriller... A mix of Hitchcockian suspense, Agatha Christie plotting, and Greek tragedy."
Entertainment Weekly

The Silent Patient is a shocking psychological thriller of a woman’s act of violence against her husband—and of the therapist obsessed with uncovering her motive.

Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening her husband Gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face, and then never speaks another word.

Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety. The price of her art skyrockets, and she, the silent patient, is hidden away from the tabloids and spotlight at the Grove, a secure forensic unit in North London.

Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist who has waited a long time for the opportunity to work with Alicia. His determination to get her to talk and unravel the mystery of why she shot her husband takes him down a twisting path into his own motivations—a search for the truth that threatens to consume him....

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of February 2019: The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides feels like it could be the big psychological thriller debut of 2019. The novel takes a few chapters to clear its throat and set the plot in motion, but once the tracks are laid it’s full steam ahead. Alicia Berenson is one-half of a glamorous couple—she’s an artist married to her fashion photographer husband, Gabriel. But when Gabriel returns home late one night, she shoots him five times in the face and refuses to speak again. Now she is being held in an institution outside London called the Grove. When a psychotherapist named Theo Faber becomes obsessed with her case, he finds his way to the Grove to treat her. Dark twists and delightful turns follow, secrets (and a diary) are revealed, and you will likely find yourself racing to the end.--Chris Schluep, the Amazon Book Review

"...contains all of the elements that I crave in a psychological thriller."
“We're all crazy, I believe, just in different ways.”What's a book that you've read because everyone else was reading it? I've been reading a book a week for the last ten years, and every once in a while a title comes along that everyone, from seasoned book reviewers to friends who rarely read, agrees must be read. Over the years those titles have included Gone Girl, Ready Player One, The Hunger Games, The Midnight Library, and countless more. The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides has been on that list since it was published in 2019. I tend to wait a bit before reading mega-hyped books, so it isn't uncharacteristic that I've waited this long to read this one. Now that I've read it, I finally see what all the hype is about.Gabriel's murder was a pretty open and closed case. The evidence against his wife Alicia was insurmountable. Responding officers found her clad in all white, the gun used to put five rounds into Gabriel's face resting at her feet. What went wrong with the happy couple? She was a successful artist, the rare individual whose creativity combined with business savvy to turn her passion into a lucrative career. He was an equally thriving fashion photographer, the perfect match for his talented wife. Despite all of the evidence that Alicia killed her husband, investigators are unable to ascertain one final piece of the puzzle. Why did Alicia murder Gabriel? They can't expect an answer any time soon. Alicia hasn't spoken a word since that night.Theo is a young psychotherapist trying to find his place in his new job at a secure psychiatric facility. He's intrigued by Alicia, who has been living in the facility ever since she was deemed unfit to stand a fair trial. He hasn't been officially assigned to work with her, but the puzzle of her case is something he is unable to ignore. As he navigates the perils of being the new guy in a place filled with peers who seem more inclined to further their own careers than to actually help their patients, Theo does everything he can to put himself in contact with the facility's most infamous charge. With enough time and access, Theo believes he can be the one to unlock her mind and find out just exactly what happened to bring her to this place. After reading The Silent Patient for myself, it is easy to see why the book has resonated with so many readers. Michaelides has written the kind of compulsively readable novel that contains all of the elements that I crave in a psychological thriller. His plot is efficient in its simplicity. One character is locked away in her own mind while the other attempts to unlock it. Shifting points of view between the two characters give the reader insight into each one while methodically revealing bits of information that ramp up the suspense and drive the plot forward. Michaelides steers the reader through the labyrinth-like narrative he's constructed, allowing us to attach to his characters while leading us to misdirection after misdirection. It all culminates in a climactic twist that not only shocked me but impressed me with the precision with which it was delivered. The Silent Patient has the goods. It is a complex narrative with a propulsive plot, provocative mystery, and empathetic characters that all come together into an expertly crafted read.

This is a very unique thriller book. I am not going to lie this isn’t usually my cup of tea but I was quite interested. We start the book with the knowledge of who the murderer is so the question throughout the book switched to why instead of who. I really enjoyed the analysis on the characters psyche and others opinions completely mismatching other information provided. I’m sure if you look hard enough you can see the ending long before it comes but I enjoyed the suspense and the putting of pieces together. It’s a quick read once you get into it and I really enjoyed it. I highly recommend.

It is difficult to review this book without inadvertently revealing too much. I can usually see a startling plot twist or a surprising character disclosure on the far horizon, but the stunner plot twist genuinely shocked me. It was original and inventive, but disturbing. The reader embarks on a journey with the book. A psychological thriller that is equal parts detective story. It begin with an earnest forensic psychotherapist, who is hired to treat a mute patient at a facility, who hasn’t spoken since she shot and killed her husband several years ago. Theo is determined to be the one to reach Alicia, who was once a famous painter. He theorizes that if he can renew her desire to paint, perhaps he can break her silence and heal the trauma that’s impeding her voice. This is the crux of the tale. Why did Alicia murder her spouse and why won’t she speak? The reader is lulled into believing that the story will lead down a particular path, and then, suddenly, the narrative becomes something else entirely. I was disappointed that I’d been fooled by the misdirection, but this was cleverly done by Michaelides. Several red herrings were introduced by the author, making many characters into potential culprits, capable of misdeeds. I enjoyed the psychological aspects of the book, and found the discussions regarding early childhood development and trauma exposure to be compelling. This is a dark and atmospheric tale, in which art and weather figure prominently. Actions and motivations are as mercurial as the humid heat, the respite of falling snow or an angry, careless brushstroke. The book concludes abruptly, and is left open-ended, which is decidedly frustrating, given the powerful reveal that was the point of the entire endeavor. Michaelides mentions his wish to revisit Theo’s character again in the future, so perhaps more will be forthcoming. The story is already provocative. The ambiguous, unfinished ending just invites more intrigue, speculation and individual interpretation. This is a chilling mystery and a worthy debut.

I think the book was OK had I feel like if I was not a mental health therapist, I probably would’ve liked the book better. I was almost positive for the first half of the book that it was set in the 60s to 80s purely due to the hard-on that the narrator/author has with Freud and the psychoanalytical orientation that comes with him (as well as the major ethical and legal violations written in the book—very 80’s mental health vibe). I know that the the author states that he had some training in mental health as well as his own personal experiences with therapy in his book questions and I guess I just worry that this book is not a great example of what therapy can be however as a detective novel and a thriller, I think it was good. The surprises were overall unique and I think it was a fun book to read. I just probably wouldn’t recommend it to any of my friends that are also in the field.

I would have never guessed the plot twist the author created for this book. It was absolutely amazing and well thought out. As I was reading this book, I thought I knew what the plot twist would be. I was crafting this review in my head, saying it was an intriguing book, though predictable if you look hard enough. WELL I WAS SO WRONG! This is an incredibly mind boggling book that has an ending that will BLOW YOUR MIND. I got chills while reading the last few chapters. There’s so much more I want to say but I will reserve that for people who have read it already. If you are tired of always predicting the endings of books or want to be SEVERELY HUMBLED IN YOUR PREDICTION SKILLS, get this book!!!!!

I really enjoyed this book but by the end of Part Two I was beginning to develop some ideas about what was happening. I had not figured it out, but I had my suspicions. Turns out I was correct… mostly. The main characters were very well fleshed out. A great story from a great storyteller. Would definitely recommend it. I finished it in under 36 hours…the pace will absolutely run away with you!
