Couple of different issues here.

- First the moisture sensor for a lot of potted plants, especially if they are fairly large, doesn't work super great for just going into a few inches of the soil. So even if this worked well (which it doesn't), it might not be great.
- So now the main part, the app and working with it is not a great setup, not really a review on this item specifically, but the system as a whole, and unfortunately it's quite expensive for that lack of working.

So the sensors work as described. The app is definitely buggy and it seems like if more explanation was given for the lights on the sensor and the button then more people would make it through the set up process.

I bought the gro system because I have some cherry trees that are dying from overwatering and I want to monitor their soil moisture levels

First off, the physical quality of the device, hub and packaging are really great. For a device that is going to sit in the dirt day in and day out, these sensors appear well designed for the task.

Next, it seems like they fixed the address or location issue in the app that previous reviewers mentioned.

What I have learned after setting up 3 sensors is that it doesn’t always tell you if it paired. Have the sensor near the hub when pairing. In pairing mode you push the sensor button hard one time quickly. Yes it’s hard to push. You will see the light pulse sometimes brightly and sometimes dimly. Within 15 seconds or so it will stop pulsing and stay bright for 5 seconds or so and then go dark. That means it paired. If you don’t see the sensor on the app home screen I would try pairing it again until you get a “sensor paired” notice. You can log out of the app and back in and the sensor will show up but if it didn’t complete the pairing it won’t get data. This part is important and not in the manual. If you want to find out if it paired, put it in the soil within 30 ft or so of the hub and push the sensor button once, which is the on demand reading feature that is also not advertised well. The light will pulse once. You should be able to open the app within a minute or so and open the sensor in the app and it will tell you the soil moisture level and it will say “updated a few seconds ago”. If it doesn’t, it didn’t pair correctly. I have found that pairing multiple sensors concurrently works best and have had trouble adding sensors without having to remove all the sensors and start over. You can disconnect a sensor by holding down the sensor button hard for about 10 seconds. It will flash quickly for 5 seconds or so meaning that it dropped the pairing with the hub.

If all fails, push the reset button on the side of the hub and start over. That worked for me.

Once you get them working and they are in Bluetooth range of the hub, they seem to work great. No they don’t update on a 5 min interval or any logical interval. It is probably a power saving feature. I am sure there is some algorithm or trigger for when they send data. It seems like if they haven’t updated for numerous hours, that opening the app triggers them to update again. So if I close the app and look again in about an hour, they have started updating again. I have had mine for a couple weeks and the battery life is still full so I think the batteries will last a decent amount of time.

If you have done much research, you know that there aren’t many option for these types of app based sensors on the market. There were more but they have slowly disappeared. I would like to give Scott’s some credit for keeping this option alive for people looking for ways to help their plants. Their customer service is great so if you have issues call them before you give up and return it.

To install you have to pair it with a hub that plugs into an outlet, using a cellphone app to set it up. Could not get it to pair even when the hub and sensor were right next to each other. Also could not get it to go on my wifi network. Returned it and tried another but that didn't work either. I opened a case with Scott and talked to a person who said I need to keep trying until it paired (his experience). Retried it many times with no success. Seems like it's not quite ready for consumer use.

This is one of those objects that you can't really review because it needs another more expensive piece before it can work properly. I didn't read well enough. I am not going to pay $130 to buy the missing hub. I certainly don't mind installing apps and setting up to monitor, but I sure don't want to pay so much for the hub. Note, the hub only contains one sensor. I think I will monitor my solitary indoor plant that requires water only occasionally due to being a succulent.
