Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Toddler-PreS-Clinical psychologist Genhart's latest book introduces some of the youngest readers to the symbolism behind each stripe of the famous rainbow flag. Confetti endpapers lead to an opening scene with a cluster of flags held aloft. A page turn reveals an exuberant, racially diverse group of kids each holding up a rainbow flag of their own. Subsequent spreads go through the colors one after the other. Each spread also depicts same-sex couples (some interracial) lovingly interacting with their children. The result is a joyful celebration of rainbow families and the way the day-to-day brings out the six meanings of the flag: life, healing, sunlight, nature, harmony, and spirit. Passchier's colorful cartoon style casts many characters in the same simplistic mold. Still, the scenes shine a noteworthy and positive light on LGBTQIA+ parenting. The illustrations also augment Genhart's economical text to expand the story, striking a good balance between depicting families in isolated scenes and as part of a larger, not exclusively LGBTQIA+ community. A final page goes further to suggest global pride via several flag-waving individuals in front of cultural landmarks. Though excellent for anytime sharing, the text functions as a wonderful bridge between Stevenson's Pride Colors, Sanders and Salerno's Pride, and Pitman and Clifton-Brown's Sewing the Rainbow -the latter two of which expand on the flag's origins for older readers. VERDICT A win for LBGTQIA+ families and libraries seeking to diversify their shelves.-Alec Chunn, Eugene Public Library, ORα(c) Copyright 2011. First a quick note about some "Reviews" that were left by people who never even looked at the book: Honestly, I wasn't going to buy the book at first. My house is flooded with books, this book was going to go on the list of books to buy after I purge. But after reading some "Reviews" that were actually comments from people regarding LGBTQ+ education in general rather than THE ACTUAL BOOK, a bon fire was lit in my heart and I was ready to buy 100 copies just to spite these reviewers. Alas I calmed down and settled on impulse buying just 1 copy, for now.

The actual book review: I wasn't exactly sure what to expect to be honest. So when I got to crack the book open, I was so pleasantly surprised. The illustrations are beautiful, whimsical, and just fun. The writing really whittled down all of the layers of complex issues that adults see, down to elegant simple reasons as to why we celebrate Pride month. This book doesn't point out how different same sex couples can look compared to your traditional nuclear family. The illustrations seamlessly include same sex couples (a mix of ethnicities are included) with their kids in very everyday scenes that all families experience. Together with the writing, it's all so beautifully normal and harmonious. The kids like the book, I LOVE the book.

This is a great book for education. Got this book for my family and my kiddoe read it and loved it. It is very educational learning about the LGBTQIA+ community. I highly recommend this book for individuals who want to teach acceptance and understanding, especially if someone you know is part of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Rainbow by Michael Genhart is a cute book that explains what each color in the rainbow flag stands for. The illustrations are very cute and I love the different couples throughout the book. Not only do you see LGBTQ+ couples on these pages, but also lots of different races/interracial couples. This is a really cute first Pride book, but I do wish there was a little more writing in it - perhaps describing what different people like to do for the different colors.

It's a nicely made book but not what I expected at all. Very basic and unless you point out some drawings are same gender appearance it's a book of color not really pride.
