From the Publisher

David Bowie

David Bowie

David Bowie became an icon to many in the LGBTQ+ community. His work opened the door for others to embrace sexual diversity, and he challenged people’s perception of gender stereotypes.

Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo

Frida shared her work with Diego Rivera, who encouraged her to continue her artistic career path. It was not long before the couple fell in love and they married in 1929, but it was a rocky and turbulent marriage. Frida, who was openly bisexual, had affairs with men and women. Diego too had numerous affairs, and the couple eventually divorced, although they married once more in 1940!

Frida Kahlo, the Mexican, bisexual, Communist, feminist has become one of the best-known artists of all time.

David Bowie

Freddie Mercury

Freddie was a charismatic performer, who wore many outfits onstage that were seen as pushing the boundaries of “men’s clothing”, such as leotards, leather, and PVC garments. He dated both men and women, although he didn’t publicly label his sexuality.

Marsha P. Johnson & Sylvia Rivera

Marsha P. Johnson & Sylvia Rivera

Marsha P. Johnson, a self-identified drag queen, moved to New York City in the early sixties, where she met her long-time friend Sylvia Rivera, who also referred to herself as a drag queen and as transgender.

Both Marsha and Sylvia experienced difficult childhoods, not being accepted for who they truly were and never quite fitting in with those around them.

Their bravery and determination helped shatter barriers for future members of the LGBTQ+ community, and they will always be remembered as fearless and courageous for their part in shaping LGBTQ+ history.

The author and the illustrator put together an interesting book that can help older students and adults learn about 53 LGBTQ heroes that have made a difference in how LGBT people are treated and feel about themselves. Every page is colorful with an eye catching appropriate illustration of the hero and the text of each one conveys so much meaningful information. The authors even mention that Da Vinci might not have been gay. This book would be a wonderful book to have older students each select the person that they felt was the most outstanding queer hero or the queer hero who helped others the most. I will be giving a copy of this book to the college my sons attended and I worked at.

This book is absolutely fantastic! We have been reading it in my LGBTQAI+ club and learning about different icons, influencers, and important people from all over the world. The artwork is absolutely gorgeous, it’s written beautifully, and this would be a really great way to introduce people of all ages to queer heroes.

I just bought and read this book - what a delight! It's so hard to find empowering and positive children's books showing LGBQT+ folks in history and today. I can't wait to share this with my gender fluid child, and very much appreciate the love and attention put into creating this book.

The book's introduction is personal and explains the deep importance of what follows to the author.  She recalls looking for people more like her and longing for role models; Ms. Sicardi is making what she wanted easily available to young readers.

This book can be read in order or flipped through.  It is engagingly illustrated and filled with people, some of whom readers will know even as others become new acquaintances.  Just some of those profiled include Sappho, Freddie Mercury, Emma Gonzalez, James Baldwin, Tove Jansson, Martina Navratilova, Tim Cook. Virginia Woolf, Lili Elbe and Nobuko Voshiya.  The book also includes a helpful glossary.

This title provides its readers with a sense that they are not alone in the world.  It may well encourage them to learn more about those in the book whom they find most appealing.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title in exchange for an honest review.

I received an ARC copy of this book from NetGalley

actual rating: 3.5

This book was absolutely gorgeous and had several people I had not heard of before, although it also featured many of the people you would expect in a book like this. I think it was a little bit bare bones but it is meant for children so I get that they wanted to keep things simple and also focus more heavily on the design element. I also think they did a good job with featuring a lot of POC. Unfortunately there weren't any people who were ace or genderfluid or really any identities outside of the basic 'LGBT' part of the LGBTQ they advertise in the title. This is not surprising to me at this point but as an ace person myself I'm getting kind of sick of it. I think it's a good starter book but definitely needs some supplemental material to cover the identities not mentioned here.

“Queer Heroes” is a visually appealing, well written introduction to many LGBTQ+ icons. The little blurbs for each individual provide a nice overview of their life and impact on the LGBTQ+ community. A wealth of ethnicities and nationalities are represented making this a great overview of LGBTQ+ politics the world over. The illustrations are vivid and the format makes this a book you can binge read, then come back to time and time again.

I would love to see more titles like this produced, with an increase in representation for additional identities within the LGBTQ+ community. As someone striving to create an inclusive and welcoming Teen/Tween collection at our small library, this book offers a great jumping off point for young readers with an interest in LGBTQ+ history and leaders. I will definitely be requesting this for purchase at my library as a great addition to our Teen/Tween Non-Fiction collection.
