One of greatest sets Lego has ever produced!
First I want to say that if you like Lego’s and are thinking about buying this set, do it – the end result is a fantastic model. The reviews that say it does not go together properly or that the instructions are not correct in spots are just plain wrong. I do not know the background of everyone building one of these, but if the instructions are followed EXACTLY as shown in the drawings it will go together and produce a very nice, sturdy model. No glue is needed to hold anything together as some have suggested, and the parts fit tight like all Legos do. While I’m sure that even Lego from time to time can miss a piece on a set this complex, which I am sure is frustrating, the set I received had no missing pieces. The set comes in 12 bags plus a great instruction manual that has some nice history of the Saturn V. I want to stress that if you are not familiar with Lego instructions or used to building complex structures please try to familiarize yourself with the steps and how they progress throughout the build. A couple of things to keep in mind when building this or any Lego set:1) Build on a hard surface such as a dining room table or counter top. This will help stabilize the model as it gets taller, especially when putting together the sections on step 37. Another very important thing about building on a hard surface is it allows you to seat all of the pieces completely before moving on to the next step. I do not hold the parts in my hands generally to put them together, I rest all the parts on the table and press them COMPLETELY TOGETHER AFTER EVERY STEP before moving on. Not only does that make the connections as tight as they can be, it also helps to line things up when joining sections together down the road. It might not seem like much, but a tenth of a mm here and a tenth of a mm there adds up quickly when you start stacking subassemblies together. I believe that is where a lot of people are encountering issues with parts not lining up. I think this is where people are having problems with the side pieces built from bag #2 not fitting properly onto the subassembly from step 37.2) Another important thing to keep an eye on is the orientation of the parts in the drawings. Step 1 for example has two pieces coming together with a joint line down the middle. Keep that joint line exactly as the drawings show as you move through the steps. On step 4 for example it has the joint line of the parts from step 1 going from upper left to lower right – keep it oriented that way until the drawing show it otherwise even if it is hard to see in the drawings. It stays oriented like that until step 15 where it shows to rotate the part when adding on other subassemblies. This may seem tedious, especially on a symmetrical section like in the first 14 steps, but it will assure the parts are on properly. This model has a lot of parts and one mistake early on can result in something no fitting later. Lego does not randomize the drawings, they are oriented the exact same way in the next drawing unless they specifically show a part rotated.3) After each step look at what you built and make sure it looks EXACTLY the way it shows in the drawings. Count the number of exposed pegs on each part and double check the assemblies are built properly. If it’s not the same as the drawings fix it now before moving on.4) Open one bag of parts at a time and organize your larger parts into groups before starting to build. This will make you build go faster and you will have a better understanding of the parts you have to use. For the parts in the smaller bags I usually dump those into a container to keep them from rolling all over the table and getting lost.5) Make sure you use the correct parts. A lot of parts look similar or have similar colors, so this is where organizing parts as in #4 above really helps. This may be the source of some reviewers stating their set has missing parts when in fact they used the wrong parts in an earlier step, and now think the set has missing parts.6) If you get tired take a break. This is a big model with lots of parts and you don’t want to make a mistake and regret it 100 steps later!7) Before you give this set a bad review because you can’t get a part to fit or think you are missing a part, start a review and include some pictures of the area you are having problems with. I can almost guarantee you that you have something not put together properly.

Some background: I loved LEGO as a kid, as much for tinkering and building new things as for building sets, but it has been nearly a decade since last I built a set. But this holiday, I found I had some time to spare for something like this and, as someone who enjoys following spaceflight news and history, this set caught my eye.

And wow, did this deliver. This set is at once ingeniously designed (the innards and ways the cylindrical shape and step-downs are accomplished are amazing), pretty accurate to life (not only in looks, but also in the staging), and enormous (reading the note that it was one meter long on the box did not prepare me for the awesome reality of this thing). It's also, incidentally, beautiful.

LEGO has always done Space themes well, and I am happy to have experienced that that tradition has been carried forward. This is a set with a great balance between 'special pieces' (the printed, not stickered, tiles are sparingly used exactly where they're needed) and creatively used 'normal pieces' is excellent. In the best LEGO way, this set repurposes many pieces for use in ways which are often surprising in order to connect at angles or represent rocketry plumbing. Some areas are so complex that only after a few pages of directions is the purpose of some of the innards fully revealed; building this set is like a drama, where sometimes I worried that here or there was an unnecessary complexity which would ultimately lead to weakness. But every time, this was disproved once the whole point of a section of building was achieved. There are a few spots where I felt like one piece could have been used in place of two or four others, in a way which suggests to me that some decisions in the construction of this set were specifically for the purpose of reaching that '1969' number exactly. Cool move.
Nevertheless, completed, this thing looks effortless.

So, in conclusion: I applaud the faithfulness, creativity, and value of this set, especially for the experience of building it, and I'm very happy to get back into LEGO after years!

this kit is amazing. You will be amazed at the level of detail that went into its design and how good it looks when put together. It is realistic, beautiful, and a pleasure to build. It's also larger and more imposing than I anticipated, reflecting the grandeur of the original Saturn V. The included figurines really help to put the scale of this rocket into proportion. It is one thing to have seen those spectacular launch images, but to see a physical, realistic model is quite another! It's modular, so you can easily snap the first, second, third stage, and CSM apart. There's even room for the LEM inside the Lunar Module Adaptor! The CSM separates as well allowing you to replay the major maneuvers of the Apollo mission. The model also includes a good looking LEM and 2 set-pieces so that you can mount and display the LEM with the astronaut figurines on lunar soil (US flag included!) and the CM after its ocean landing. I can think of only a few minor improvements. (1) The Launch Escape System is difficult to separate from the Command Module, meaning that you can't easily dock the CM with the LEM (one of the pivotal maneuvers of the Apollo missions). This is however possible with the LEM that is intended for the ocean landing set-piece (also a niece touch BTW!). The CM on the rocket is also just one single piece that is completely white with no detail whatsoever. This may approximate how it looked at launch time, but even a few small surface details would have made it look much better (2) The LEM is not easily mounted in the Lunar Module Adapter. It needs a stud that is already used by lunar set piece, but the kind of quick release snap used to keep the stages together would have been better. Overall I would say a LOT of pieces and detail went into the (often invisible) internals of the first, second, and third stages, but the the CSM, LEM, Launch Escape System, and Lunar Module Adaptor are not as well developed. That's a shame because those are arguably the most interesting parts of the rocket. That said, this is an amazing kit and you will not be disappointed. Thanks Lego!

Firstly, the kit was complete and original. And wow, what a fun build. Not a Lego expert but built the Porsche 911 RSR which was technically more of a challenge - this kit combined with nostalgia and a love for space tech was amazing. Beautifully designed kit with solid stages (some may have problems but generally good to assemble) and, oh my, it’s huge! Grand like a rocket should be and looks fantastic when completed. For anyone with a passion for lunar technology and an interest in this age of technology, an absolute gem. Can’t recommend this enough. My only problem now is finding a really cool place to display it which my wife agrees to. I bought this at CAD 150 and it went up stupidly before Xmas. Official price is 150 and it’ll come again, I think. For that price, best Lego kit available, no brainer. Enjoy!
