Written in a straight-forward, concise, and at times humorous manner, Nash-Marshall's Joan of Arc acquaints the reader with a historical character who became a legend during her lifetime legend. Joan is presented to us as a brave young girl who received a mission and who courageously used all of her faculties and gifts to accomplish it. Nash Marshall's approach is refreshingly honest. The narrative is centered on Joan, her mission, her work to fulfill it, her betrayal. The author gives us the facts and allows us readers to draw our own conclusions. Lovers of history will find the author's thesis on the connection between the resurgence of France, the betrayal of Joan, and the fall of Byzantium very interesting.

Joan the incarnation of God's Holy Spirit.
5 Stars
Joan the incarnation of God's Holy Spirit.
I have not read the book yet by Siobhan Nash-Marshall, but I did VERY MUCH like her documentary/drama she appeared in and was interviewed in (2005 - Joan of Arc - Child of War, Soldier of God).I think that anyone who does not believe in Jesus Christ as the incarnation of the Son of God made manifest in human flesh, could still believe that Joan of Arc was an incarnation of the Holy Spirit made manifest in human flesh. Joan performed miracles, predicted the future, performed exploits, and came from very humble beginnings (an illiterate peasant virgin teenage girl). I believe that anyone who cannot believe that Elijah returned as John the Baptist, could still find it believable that the reformed sinner/harlot, the apostle Mary Magdalene, returned to save France once again (as she had before, per The Golden Legend) as the peasant virgin girl, Joan of Arc (Jehanne Sybille Darc of Domremy, France - region of Lorraine). ARC means to "bow", as in to "bow down" in humility. And just as Mary had bowed down at the feet of Jesus Christ, to wash his feet with her tears and dry them with her hair, so too Joan of Arc bowed down to her heavenly voices which instructed her to raise the siege of Orleans and crown the Dolphin Charles, as King of ALL France, and go to her untimely death, still a girl, to seal Charles' kingship (lasting from July 1429-July 1461). JESUS-MARIA. Amen. FYI, King Charles 7th died on the FEAST DAY of Saint Mary Magdalene (July 22nd). Mary was the holy spirits of YOM KIPPUR and TABERNACLES made manifest. Joan was the holy spirit of TRUMPETS made manifest. Is it any wonder then that it took 500 years for Joan to be officially recognized as a SAINT? Joan has heralded the soon return of Jesus Christ, who like Joan, will come riding on a white horse, dressed in white (armor or robes), brandishing a sharpened two-edged sword, carrying the banner of God with the proclamation: JESUS-MARIA, and a picture of God appearing above the mercy seat atop the ARC of the covenant, come to vanquish the enemies of God forever.SOME of the PREDICTIONS of JOAN OF ARC:(1) Joan predicted she would last only a year or a little longer after first coming to the Dolphin Charles 7th at Chinon.Joan told Charles to use her well during this time. Joan believed she must toil mightily during this short period. From Spring 1429 (at Chinon) to Spring (May 23rd) 1430, Joan lasted. She was then placed in prison out-of-action until her death in 1431.(2) Joan predicted that after her death, within 7 years, the English would be driven from France for good. The Burgundian traitors joined with French Loyalists and drove the English out of France for good as Joan had predicted would happen.(3) Joan of Arc fulfilled the MAID of LORRAINE prophecies. Things foretold about Joan of Arc's coming by great prophets.SOME of the MIRACLES of JOAN OF ARC:(1) convincing the Dolphin Charles 7th to give her a suit of armor, and lead his army to lift the siege of Orleans and doing just that.(2) receiving an English arrow deep into her chest (6 inches deep) at Orleans, pulling it out herself, then returning to the battle.(3) crowning Charles 7th as King of All France at Rheims ("Homs") Cathedral, driving out the English and Burgundians the entire trip to Rheims.(4) Joan unearthed a famous ancient sword, knowing just where to find it without having a way to have known where to find it. The rust fell right off the sword.(5) after Joan took the Tourelles fort at Orleans, Joan (and the entire French army) soon faced the entire English army on the battlefield. Joan road out to meet the English army, alone. She told them if they did not leave that they would all be buried in this field. She drove the English army away by these words, single-handedly.(6) leaping out the window 66 ft. above ground, from her Burgundian, magdala (tower), prison cell, and landing without injury.[note: if you want to see Mary Magdalene do something similar, which is unprecedented in films, watch the recent film, RISEN, starring Joseph Fiennes as the Roman Tribune to Pontius Pilate. Mary is being chased by Roman soldiers, when she suddently stops, turns, and gut kicks the closest soldier to her, knocking him to the ground - then Mary leaps out the window to escape. This is an unprecedented portrayal of Mary Magdalene as a kind of Joan of Arc figure! Mary is even interrogated by Tribune and his aide. The aide calls Mary a woman of the street (same as a whore/harlot - English called Joan this), and "perhaps a witch".Also...IS THE HOLY SPIRIT: (1) a "Paraclete"? or (2) a "Pair of Cleats"?Witnesses report that they once observed Joan unsuccessfully attempt to mount her horse which was cavorting wildly.Joan ordered the horse to, "Dig into the grass", which was before the church. The horse immediately stopped moving, and Joan was able to easily mount the horse.POPE PIUS X said about Joan, that she was a bright shining new star destined to be the GLORY of not only France, but of the UNIVERSAL CHURCH as well. Pope Pius X was the Pope who BEATIFIED Joan in 1909 (Joan the Blessed). Joan was canonized as a SAINT in 1920.

I recently had the opportunity to visit France. While I was there I visited many historical sites that were prominent in the history of France and England during the Hundred Years' War. Wherever I went I was greeted with the reminiscence of a remarkable young girl. Since I did not know the details of her life, I looked for a book that would tell the true story of this saint without sugar coating her accomplishments. I found that "A Spiritual Biography" filled the bill. In a short read I was able to learn the life of this teenager and her miraculous accomplishments. The author has a lively clear and engaging style. Her explaination of the historical facts of the time were in accord with my understanding of medieval Europe. Eventhough I am a student of history, the in dept analysis of the time allowed me to have a better understanding of the people and events. Starting with the horrific death of Joan and continuing with her life story and her prejudicial trial, I just could not put the book down. I came away with a profound respect and understanding of the Maid.

I have read every book written about the victimized St. Jean D'Arc. This book gives deeper insights into her personality, the politics of her time and just how horribly cruel her fate was.

She was burned as she was more than a captured soldier by the secular courts, because Jean was a woman. No one wanted to understand her. Not even the Church, who were bought off, as stated by the secular British system..

Very sad and honest read.

Wanted a story, rather than a narrative, but it seems pretty accurate.

Very great book, I have been following Dr. Nash for a while now and can not wait for the release of her new book "The Sins of the Fathers: Turkish Denialism and the Armenian Genocide." Content is written very clearly and precisely. Thank you Dr. Nash for another great "Spiritual Biography."

This was a book club pick and I enjoyed learning about this part of history. Who didn't know Joan of Arc as the girl burned at the stake but not as an inspiration for hundreds of years.
