The instant New York Times bestseller is "a fun, delightful, un-putdownable novel" about two identical twin sisters who couldn't look more alike . . . or live more differently (PopSugar).

Nantucket is only eleven miles away from Martha's Vineyard. But they may as well be worlds apart for estranged twin sisters Harper and Tabitha Frost.

After not speaking for more than a decade, Harper and Tabitha switch islands-and lives-to save what's left of their splintered family. But the twins quickly discover that the secrets, lies, and gossip they thought they'd outrun can travel between islands just as easily as they can. Will Harper and Tabitha be able to bury the hatchet and end their sibling rivalry once and for all?

Before the last beach picnic of the season, there will be enough old resentments, new loves, and cases of mistaken identity to make this the most talked-about summer that Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket have experienced in ages.

About the Author

Elin Hilderbrand is six minutes older than her twin brother, Eric. She spent time on Martha's Vineyard (summer 1989) before she ever discovered Nantucket (summer 1993), the island she has called home for twenty-four years. Hilderbrand is the mother of three busy teenagers (pause and consider what a miracle it is that this novel even exists). The Identicals is her nineteenth novel.

Harper Frost is laid-back, easygoing. She doesn’t care what anyone thinks of her. She likes a beer and a shot and wouldn’t be caught dead wearing anything fashionable. She’s inherited her father’s rundown house on Martha’s Vineyard, but she can’t hold down a job, and her latest romantic disaster has the entire island talking.

Two beautiful islands only eleven miles apart.

Tabitha Frost is dignified, refined. She prefers a fine wine and has inherited the impeccable taste of her mother, the iconic fashion designer Eleanor Roxie-Frost. She’s also inherited her mother’s questionable parenting skills–Tabitha’s teenage daughter, Ainsley, is in full rebellion mode–and a flailing fashion boutique on Nantucket in desperate need of a cash infusion.

One unforgettable summer that will change their lives forever.

After more than a decade apart, Harper and Tabitha switch islands–and lives–to save what’s left of their splintered family. But the twins quickly discover that the secrets, lies, and gossip they thought they’d outrun can travel between islands just as easily as they can. Will Harper and Tabitha be able to bury the hatchet and end their sibling rivalry once and for all? Before the last beach picnic of the season, there will be enough old resentments, new loves, and cases of mistaken identity to make this the most talked-about summer that Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket have experienced in ages.

My Thoughts: I loved the alternating narrators in
The Identicals: A Novel . Harper Frost, living on Martha’s Vineyard with her father Billy has been estranged from her twin Tabitha for fourteen years.

Something happened all those years ago that kept them apart. On Nantucket, Tabitha is struggling with raising Ainsley, her rebellious teen, and she would love nothing more than to escape.

When Billy dies, there is a reunion of sorts…but it does not go well. Someone mistakes Tabitha for Harper and throws a drink in her face.

Harper has definitely stirred up some animosity from the folks on the Vineyard, so when she and Tabitha change places, what could happen next?

I loved how they each stepped into the other’s life, sort of, and something about this exchange stirs up in me a bit of empathy for the other.

Finding love on the “wrong” island could be just what the two need in order to forge a reconciliation. I found myself rooting for each of them, as I stepped into the perspective of who happened to be narrating. A five star read for me.

Fun read. What's up in the somewhat sorted lives of Tabitha and Harper. It has a strong YA vibe. *Very* easy, and sometimes simplistic, reading. But it satisfies and let's one contemplate things like, self-doubt, sibling rivalry, making your own destiny/fate, the heart wants what the heart wants, how NOT to raise a teen, etc..
I read it because someone picked it for book club, otherwise I likely wouldn't have. Shows inside the life of 40 yr old sisters, one set of teen age kids, and even some septuagenarians.

If you’re in the mood for something that is light hearted and fun, something that doesn’t take itself too seriously, read this book! I read this book on vacation in one day and I very much enjoyed it. I enjoyed all the characters…I laughed, I cried, and it made me want to go visit both Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. I look forward to reading more by this author.

Identical twins. Separated at divorce. One to Martha’s Vineyard with Fun Dad. One to Nantucket with Demanding, Proper, High-Expectations Mom. The girls are then further estranged by a family tragedy.

As adults, Harper & Tabitha may still look alike, but they have very different personalities and lead very different lives. Although things aren’t going that well for either twin.

So naturally they switch places.
Hilarity ensues.
Mad hijinks occur as the women are constantly mistaken for one another.

Not really.
They do swap islands.
And a fair amount of dialogue consists of “No, I’m Harper” and “No, I’m Tabitha”.
But they mostly do not try to pass for one another.

Hildebrand does have a way of writing that can elevate an everyday story into a romantic tale. This isn’t my favorite of her books, but I enjoyed it. The characters are likable, and it’s fascinating to learn about the distinct and unique characteristics of each island.

The sweet epilogue is written from the point of view of the dog. And the very best part? The dog doesn’t die.

5.0 out of 5 stars Escapism at its best!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 4, 2018
Elin Hildebrand books are my guilty pleasure. They tend to the unrealistic, sensational, a little naughty, BUT they are well written page-turners, and I love the settings of Martha’s Vineyard which I visited one magical day, and Nantucket, which I hope to visit before i’m too old to travel from the UK. The Identicals gave wonderful descriptions of both islands and their communities, which I hope are accurate. Neither twin came across as particularly likeable in this particular book but when you hear that their parents made them decide which parent each of them should live with when they divorced, it’s hardly surprising. There’s always a more or less happy ending, and mostly predictable, but as a holiday read, or any time you want some absorbing escapism, this book and others by Hildebrand are hard to beat.

4.0 out of 5 stars What happens next?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 1, 2019
I dud quite enjoy this book even though it felt hard to understand how a pair of identical twin sisters could have survived a fourteen year estrangement when living so close to each other. I found Tabitha largely unlikeable for most of the book and found it hard to believe that those around them could have allowed the status quo to carry on for that long. As the sister of identical twins who live 9 hours apart(by plane) but speak daily I found their relationship hard to believe. The stupidity of the parents even more. What I enjoyed the most was the opportunity to dip into the lives of those who live on Nantucket and Marth’s Vineyard and to learn more about them. I had no idea that the two islands were as estranged from each other as the twins are in this story. Obviously, the islands aren’t estranged, it’s the islanders perpetuating custom and tradition. Their traditions and determination to maintain their ways of doing and saying things differently can irk at times like the way they say “up island” or “down island”. It can feel very contrived. Has anyone ever noticed that Elin Hilderbarand takes product placement to a new level in her books though in her case it’s “venue placement”. It made me wonder whether she is paid to celebrate all the venues repeatedly mentioned in her books as I know they all exist.

The story of Ainsley and her high school gang was well drawn and felt very real and believable, unfortunately. I enjoyed her redemption though.

Despite my criticism of the book, my first thought on finishing was that I wanted to know what happens next so that probably says it all!
