Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 5 Up-In 1945, as the U.S. army neared mainland Japan, the Imperial Japanese Army evacuated its elite troops from Okinawa and left behind a force meant to slow down the Americans in the bloodiest way possible. They recruited the native Okinawans into this army, including teens like Hideki, one of the two narrators of this gripping World War II novel. As Hideki takes his two grenades (one to kill U.S. soldiers and one to kill himself), he is fated to come across the other narrator, a young American soldier, Ray. Based on research and firsthand accounts the author heard while in Okinawa, history comes violently to life in this character-driven, fictionalized account. The battle details are accurate and the characters and the growing sense of the battle's futility are well drawn and poignant. There is some offensive contemporaneous language referring to Japanese people used within the narrative, which is explained in a note at the beginning and in greater detail in the detailed historical note at the end. While this is a chilling, realistic depiction of war, the violence is not glorified or graphically described. VERDICT An excellent World War II novel, best suited for mature readers who can handle the sensitive content and brutal realities of wartime.-Elizabeth Nicolai, Anchorage Public Library, AKα(c) Copyright 2011. Praise for Grenade:* "Told by both young men, the story is gripping from start to finish as each encounters ambushes, engages in battles and experiences their devastating aftermath, and mourns the plight of innocent civilians caught in the middle. I did a review for ‘Allies’ by Gratz. DS liked it so much that we purchased ‘Grenade’ for his book club. The reading can get a little heavy obviously because of the subject matter. Makes him think and reflect on how life can be different for others. After this book, he is hooked on Gratz. Loves having a hardback book, the smell of the paper and the richness of turning a page. I believe it’s teacher recommended and also has cliff notes. His tutor looks forward to their Gratz discussions.

We are awaiting our next Gratz book to be delivered this week! So much easier when you find an author you can purchase multiple titles from.
Especially as libraries are not open due to covid. It’s impossible to browse to find an interesting read.

Im a 13 year old girl and I love books based on real events I believe that it makes the story more believable! Thats why I like this author. I've read Prisoner-3087 in the forth grade and I loved it! Iv'e always loved learning about WWll because life was soo different and interesting back then! (SPOILER ALERT COMING!) The story is told bye two points of veiws, a young american marine and a young Japenese boy who is part of the blood Iron student corps. They fight there ways from different sides of the island and they collide it the middle, of course they are frantic on what to do. So they both throw a grenade that was given to them at each other. (ANNOTHER CRAZY SPOILER COMING!!) Rey gets hit with shrapnel from the grenades and dies. Hideki lives. As you can see this is why the book is called Grenade, the grenade plays a big part in the story. Anyways, I would totally recommend this book for tweens and teens! : )

I don't know about you but when I want to try a series of books for my son, I only buy one or the first one FIRST before buying the "set" thus I started him on Refugee from a school library fundraiser purchase. LOVED it.... long story short he seriously devours these books! Takes them to school for free time, no back talk to get into bed a little earlier for reading time, begging for just 5 more minutes at bedtime - seriously, I just wish there were more - makes the mom or dad job so much easier! So my question would be if your son or daughter loved this series too -where do I go next? Open to suggestions as there is only one left in this series he is about to begin - Code of Honor.... help! :-)

Daughter loves all things Alan Gratz. If you are a fan of one of his books you will like them all to varying degrees. When asked if she would recommend she says, “Yes!” In fact she would likely become friends on the spot with someone else if she saw them reading this author on their own because it means they have great if not the best taste in books. She is and has been an avid reader for years and just turned 13, but still reads every book that comes out by Alan Gratz, so highly recommend this purchase.

I purchased this book for my grandson for Christmas. He has read many books by this author and was hoping to find this one in his school library. He was so excited to receive it that he finished it by the end of their hours long car ride back to their house after a Christmas visit. Highly recommended
