In this groundbreaking guide, the prominent therapist Dr. Robin Stern shows how the Gaslight Effect works, how you can decide which relationships can be saved and which you have to walk away from—and how to gasproof your life so you'll avoid gaslighting relationship.

Your husband crosses the line in his flirtations with another woman at a dinner party. When you confront him, he asks you to stop being insecure and controlling. After a long argument, you apologize for giving him a hard time.

Your mother belittles your clothes, your job, and your boyfriend. But instead of fighting back, you wonder if your mother is right and figure that a mature person should be able to take a little criticism.

If you think things like this can’t happen to you, think again. Gaslighting is an insidious form of emotional abuse and manipulation that is difficult to recognize and even harder to break free from.

I’m still reading this but the first few chapters are enlightening. You may begin to see how others gaslight you or even see yourself as a gaslighter. I’m teaching this to my teens early so they can be better aware of future relationships.

I ran across a blog talking about this and I had never heard of it before. After looking at the short paragraph it had about things to look for it chilled me and I decided to get the book. After a couple of chapters it was clear that I'd finally found the answer I'd been searching for to the behavior of someone that I've considered emotionally abusive. I thought this book was excellent and covered the material very well. I highly recommend it.
In my case, my gaslighter is not a romantic relationship and is closer to the work relationship. A couple of reviewers have complained that the book focuses too much on romantic relationships. Yes at least two of the main examples are romantic relationships, yet there was one that was consistently used through the book of a boss issue and another of a man with issues from a family member. I think like many books that dig into uncomfortable feelings it is easy to come up with reasons to not continue reading it. So some of those complaints might stem from wanting the gaslighter to change when there is work required from both people. A few reviewers felt that the book wasn't 'strong' enough about emotional abuse. Yes gaslighting is emotional abuse. Yes it is horrible. Yes there are varying degrees of it. But, in order to move past in regardless of the severity, it is going to take some work by the victim to get to a point where they don't just continue to attract them. This book really talks about what it is. Gives examples. Gives exercises. Gives some direction. For some it may be enough to just read and be able to deal with the problem, but for people in Stage 2 and most certainly Stage 3, it is likely that afterwards a therapist may be needed to resolve issues. All in all an excellent book and very helpful for me and my situation. I highly recommend reading it.

I really enjoyed this book, it was eye opening. My spouse has been gaslighting me for years, and I was so confused that I really did think I was crazy. I'd been seeing a therapist for over a year when I read this book and it jumped my healing forward immensely. The hard part to stomach, but it is the truth - I allowed my spouse to convince me I was crazy. This doesn't mean I'm to blame for his bad behavior, but I am the one who allowed him make me doubt my own sanity. I think we all grow up with this ideal of how a relationship should look. We think we'll end up with someone who respects, validates and encourages us, but sadly many of us end up with a gaslighter. Counteracting gaslighting often doesn't fit into the model we've developed about how to behave in a relationship and we think somehow we are being a bad spouse or not open to criticism if we push back on the gaslighting messages being delivered. This book allowed me to see where I was letting my spouses craziness get into my head. It showed me that taking a stand on my own behalf was my right. It takes a long long time to overcome many years of gas lighting, but once you get there, you know you'll never go back to allowing someone to make you doubt your own sanity, beliefs or feelings ever again. Reading this book took me out of the self-doubt, self-blame game.

The Gaslight Effect: How to Spot the Hidden Manipulation Others Use to Control Your Life

If in your interpersonal relationships, there is an individual who generally makes you (1) doubt your own competence; (2) doubt your own beliefs; (3) doubt your own actions and/or words; (4) doubt your own feelings ; (5) doubt your own perceptions; and (6) doubt your own recollection (s) of reality, you must read this book. According to our author, Stern (2007), there are folks who "gaslight" others ; who psychologically abuse others. However, their psychological abuse of others is covert and very cleverly masked. Its intent is to drive you crazy, to prove you wrong in your own eyes. The abusive individual, the "gaslighter" wants to always feel right and in power. Those individuals who tend to be caring and aspire to gain the approval of the "gaslighter" become easy targets of this psychological manipulation and psychological violence.
The book includes examples, resources and practical advice for the targets. I found this book to be an eye opener. It is sad that so many good folks out there have no knowledge of these covert tactics of abuse. The main content of the book is covered in about 250 pages. You would not be able to finish this book in one sitting. You would need to read this book over a few days, may be over a few weeks. There is a lot to reflect upon. Please do read it. I highly recommend it to you.

It's helpful for anyone to know about gaslighting - but for someone in the middle of a gaslighting relationship this book is a vital lifeline that can shed light on a confusing, exhausting, and painful experience.

It feels like Dr Robin has explained my life to me, answering questions such as: how did I get myself into this situation; how did go I from being confident and brave to meek and depressed; and why do I always feel like there is something wrong with my marriage even though my husband (Good Guy gas lighter) is always right and tells me I should be happy.

I don't talk to anyone about my marriage. I am embarrassed and ashamed. Even during couples counselling I have not articulated what is happening. So we never get anywhere. This book is helping me to understand the situation.

I don't know if we can fix our relationship, and after living with it for 15 years, I don't know if I have the desire or energy to try. But at least now I can better understand what is going on and I have some tools to "turn off the gas."

For anyone going through this, or thinking that maybe, just maybe, gas lighting rings a bell, please read this book. At a minimum, you'll learn a few interesting anecdotes about a famous gas lighter in the US political sphere - at best you'll understand the mental prison that you are in and learn to unlock the cage.

Good luck!
