Exposing Financial Abuse: When Money is a Weapon is a raw and shocking exposé of economic exploitation and abuse that occurs within families, the family law courts, among peers, and places of worship.

Within Exposing Financial Abuse: When Money Is a Weapon, you will be given the opportunity to pull the curtain back and see into the lives of those who have been financially harmed by someone close to them. Taking a closer look at this hidden world is a unique gift that cannot be taken lightly or without honor for those who have chosen to allow us to peek into the most personal aspects of their lives.

Test yourself. How would you describe financial abuse? It is quietly happening all around us and is hidden within our neighborhoods and communities. You probably know someone who lives within a financially abusive household, and you don't even know it.

What is financial abuse? Has your spouse or parent taken out lines of credit in your name without your consent? Does your ex-spouse suddenly stop paying child support as a means of furthering their abuse and control over your life? Has your partner moved money from your joint account to a secret individual account without your prior knowledge or consent? Do your parents use financial gifts as an open door to demand future compliance on your part? Are you blamed for creating financial stress but are not the one who overspends? Did your ex-spouse hide his or her income from being included in the calculations for child and/or spousal support? Have your religious leaders said that you must give to the church first, even if that means you cannot provide for your household's basic needs? Do you carry the full burden of making enough money for your household because your partner refuses to maintain steady employment?

After Shannon's industry-changing first book, Healing from Hidden Abuse, I was so excited to read her second one. It did not disappoint! Although the topic is challenging and (at times) upsetting, the author manages to convey the content in a way that feels down-to-earth and safe.

The book begins by outlining some of the major red flags and tactics behind financial abuse. By keeping the victim from being financially independent, the perpetrator is able to force others to remain dependent on them. But like subtle abuse, this behavior is not always so obvious. It can be insidious, confusing, and downright mind-boggling. The abuser may project their own behavior onto the target, blaming them for the financial predicament that the abuser caused.

In one instance, the abuser even withheld money from the victim receiving medical help and prescriptions. And on the other side, there are partners who secretly build up debt in their partner's name, burying families in seemingly insurmountable problems.

But my favorite part of this book is that it also offers solutions. While many books about abuse simply suggest "just leave and go No Contact", this is not feasible advice when it comes to financial abuse. Often times, the abuser has a literal hold over the target's entire financial independence. So Shannon offers many creative approaches to managing these impossible situations safely. She also offers an entire section on protection, so this book can help anyone, even people who have not yet experienced financial manipulation.

Thank you to Shannon and all of the people who shared their stories in this great book!

As a mental health therapist in private practice and a person who has had many emotionally abusive relationships (familial, work, romantic, friends), I found this book to be very very useful on many levels. Also, the book is very timely for myself professionally (clients coming in with similar issues) and personally (just realized fairly recently what the truth of my life has been with specific people). Thank you Shannon for writing such a useful book! One thing though I did find as a problem. I ordered a paperback book and the fonts are huge! I am not sure if it was the printing of this particular book I bought or if it is consistent with all of the print versions of this book, but I think you should know it really makes it feel a bit unprofessionaly done. I think you might want to speak with your editor and publisher about correcting this for future printings. It makes it look like it was self published. That is my only complaint. The book is wonderful and so needed! Thank you, Amy Phillips, EdD, LCPC

I think I always knew that there was something wrong with the way I was treated financially by my Dad and how he controlled the household spending excessively growing up. I always thought there was a disconnect. Bc he was making bunch of money but we were living in a state of poverty. And I couldn’t quite put it into words, but it just feels awful. I’m so glad to have encountered this book. And the examples and survivors’ stories affirmed my suspicion and intuition from my gut. It was Financial Abuse period. Knowledge and acceptance of the abuse actually taking place gives me more peace towards separating from my toxic family. And it’s also inspiring to me at least to know the author is also a survivor of adult child of dysfunctional family systems. I’m slowly and finally chipping away the false guilt and shame put upon me by the abuser and finally walk away.

After reading her book “ Healing from Hidden abuse” it opened my eyes. I didn’t expect financial abuse to happen, but it was going on all along. Both these books opened my eyes and mind to the emotional destructive marriage I was in. I truly can clearly see now.

Shannon Thomas does an incredible job explaining what goes on behind the scenes and how so many people get away with devastating others financially. All judges, attorneys and therapists should be required to read this!!!
