Review of New Formula - UV AOX Elements 50 vs UV Elements 44
DON’T LET THE PRODUCT PHOTO FOOL YOU — I guess it hasn’t been updated? The photo shown is the original formula UV Elements 44, but this page is to buy the new formula (EltaMD has reformulated this product) UV AOX Elements 50.This is a review of the new formulation, UV AOX Elements 50 spf where I compare it with the original UV Elements 44 spf (and respond to recent reviews I’ve been reading and how they match up with my experience)I’ll start with what I like. I really like that it’s 50 spf. What’s up with these random spf numbers from Eltamd? — 44, 41, 46. I always try to wear 50 because my face is very susceptible to burning and I use tretinoin or other retinoids. I really did love the original Elements 44 spf, but I do like that the new one is 50. HOWEVER, I know they had to add some ingredients to bulk up the spf, and that means the new formula is not a purely physical sunscreen (mainly, they added Butyloctyl Salicylate, which is a chemical UV filter). I know this matters to a lot of people. I know a lot of people can be sensitive to it. So I get the negative reviews. For me I don’t love that it’s in there, but I also don’t totally mind. I’m fortunate enough to where I’m not sensitive to it.On to the shade of the tint. Reviews on here are saying it’s more orange. I don’t see that personally. I still have a tube of the Elements 44 and I took a picture here comparing them side by side on the back of my hand. The top is the Elements 44. The bottom is AOX 50. They really look the same to me, and when I use the AOX the tint still blends into my skin tone the same way the original formula did (and I’m fair for the most part). It does seem that for many this isn’t the case though, and I know everyone is differentSome downsides next. The new formula is thicker. It makes sense with how they bulked up the spf, that’s why it’s thicker. So it doesn’t feel as moisturizing. Here we’re paying extra for less product (1.7oz).To end, if you can, try to stock up on the remaining stock of the Elements 44, which I did. But when it eventually runs out, for me personally, I don’t mind using the new AOX 50 because it still serves my needs — a tinted sunscreen with iron oxides (because I struggle with hyperpigmentation), and one that doesn’t have any scent, isn’t greasy, doesn’t sting my eyes, and has some moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid.
