This is a must read for anyone interested in any aspect of immigration. Helen Raleigh is a brilliant writer and historian. She covers immigration from the U. S. beginnings to the current situation and how to correct the broken welcome mat. Easy read, yet, incredibly informative and professional. All public officials and educators, should read this book. Research and bibliography astounding and complete. This would be an excellent textbook for any public policy course. I highly recommend this book. Sharon Calahan

Helen is an expert on the topic of immigration. This second edition should be in the library of anyone wishing to have a ready resource on the problems associated with people wanting to live in the US without the ready tools and techniques to succeed here. It is a fast read, well annotated with a useful appendix.

The best idea was adopting a test similar to what Canada uses to screen applicants in order to increase the chance of success for immigrants; an aptitude test of sorts. If you can't pass the test you can't immigrate here.

Things that could have been done better: 1) using a professional proofreader and editor. 2) Her fixes had the feel of what our arbitrary politicians already do. More made-up rules based on one person's opinion over anyone else's. The US Constitution already has most of the answers. For example the general welfare clause requires that no law can favor one person or group of people over another. Welfare laws break the general welfare clause for example, because one group benefits over another. Nearly every immigration regulation favors one group over another. All regulation that does should be repealed.
