I was easily able to set it up right out the box. I bought two of them in order to put on my dogs collars just in case. So far it has been great and tracking is fine. My only issue is that the accuracy of the location is slightly off sometimes but not by much, it shows the general location which has been good enough for me.

However, before you buy this, be aware that this is NOT a LIVE tracker. The airtag must be in bluetooth connection range of an iphone to update its location. If you are looking for a live tracker this is not for you unless you’re in an area where there are iphones everywhere lol.

Put your phone nearby, pull the battery tab on the airpod, and your phone will automatically set everything up. They work great for tracking, but be aware that if you are not in bluetooth range, they do not have "live" tracking. They update as frequent as they can when they ping a passing phone or other apple device, but it's not actually live like the tracking from a phone.
