The AcuRite rain guage is particularly easy to read...even from twenty feet away (assuming good vision). It also seems accurate, 'tho there's no baseline other than local media reportage is available.We live in an area beset by frequent rainfall, especially in recent years. We also farm and garden...so having a close estimate of actual rainfall is very useful. Each rain event entails reading the level, then taking the guage from the post and dumping the rainwater, then re-mounting it back in place.We found the mounting system using notched holes at the bottom of the guage was (for us) somewhat cumbersome (relatively tricky to properly engage the two holes simultaneously.For us, it was worth the trouble to drill a hole at the TOP of the rain receptical, then dangle the 'tank' from a single screw using that hole. The lower part of the guage is held from moving sideways (ie Wind) by bumpers on both sides. We can thus lift it from the top screw, flip out the rain, and pop it back in place. ~ The Duffian

If possible mount the gauge on a post where it's clear of garden shrubs and surrounding trees - you want the airflow above the gauge, hence rainfall, as even as possible without being influenced by swirls and eddies. Sticking the gauge into the soil doesn't achieve this - that's why you always see professional weather monitors mounted well above the ground.

A post height that lets you read the gauge at about your standing eye height, or remove the gauge to read it, is useful for people with bending / stooping challenges.

Removal of the gauge to empty it is fast and simple - provided you have the two mounting screws at exactly the right separation from each other. Ensure the post is vertical and the gauge is mounted vertically on it; if there's a lean, accuracy will be impaired.

Problems? None so far, although the 5 inch max capacity means that if you're receiving very high rainfall you'll need to measure and empty the gauge as needed.

Is the gauge accurate? We don't know, as we don't have any accurate way to check, but two factors would help accuracy:

1. The large size of the gauge means the 1/10th of an inch marks make it easy to reasonably accurately estimate rainfall between two marks, e.g. between 7/10ths and 8/10ths of an inch. This is impossible on a small gauge.
2. We notice that water does not seem to stick to the internal sides of the gauge; if rain falls into the gauge it all ends up at the bottom waiting to be measured.

Remember to read the water level at the bottom of the concave meniscus, not at the side where the water stretches up a little. If that's puzzling, a quick search online will give you useful info.

How long will the gauge last in south Texas heat and sunshine? Plastic doesn't tend to like either. Time will tell. Would we buy again? Based on experience so far, yes.

This is the second one I've had. They are accurate and easy to see from indoors, and look nice mounted on the deck rail. They don't last very long out in the weather, though. The red float faded to a dull pink very quickly in my last one so I removed it, but this one seems a bit sturdier, so we'll see what happens over the summer. The inside of the tank gets coated with moldy-looking moss which is hard to clean out.

I got this gauge because we've had another year of unusual rainfall here in Southern California. I got this just before what will probably be the last storm for months and months. If accurate, it said we got nearly 3 inches of rain last weekend. That is more than I imagined we got, but that's what it said. This gauge was super easy for me to install (just stick it in the dirt in the garden), and very easy to read. It said it came with screws so you could attach it to a wooden fence, but I didn't see any screws with the packaging, and that wasn't how I wanted to use it anyway. I really don't know how you could improve on this one. I really am glad to have it, and the cost was affordable!
