I asked for this book for Christmas because I like learning about Alabama the Beautiful. The book is a very easy read. It has lots of pictures and information about several structures in Alabama that have been abandoned. It details the history of each site and gives you up to date information about each one. Nice read!

The photos in this book are haunting, creepy and so interesting. I had 12 people in our house, all different ages and every single person couldn’t stop looking at it and talking about it. It was our topic of conversation on Thanksgiving. If you are at a loss for a really neat gift, look no further!!!

Back in the day, color photographs did not appear in books unless they were insanely expensive. Usually, the nature of the subject justified their use: flowers, scenic wonders, or paintings come to mind. Hence, I was very surprised and pleased to see a book devoted to abandoned places, eyesores to many, consist solely of color photography. Not only that, but the photographs are obviously from a seasoned professional.

I love to find abandoned places, especially in the woods. Despite these being mostly urban pictures, I was blown away looking at all of them, because I felt I was there. Rarely do I get a sense, even from movies, of obviating a visit to a location, but these did the trick.

I didn't rate the book a 5 because the text is disappointing. Not everyone can write superbly, and not everyone can spell or write grammatically. The text was therefore difficult to read. The good news is, however, is that each story is so fascinating, reading the text instead of just looking at the pictures is highly rewarding.

Leland Kent is well known in the community of explorers in the southeast. He is respected for his work, the quality of his photographs and his kindness. You will spend a long time looking at each photo as it creates an internal dialog of asking what happened to this house? Where are the owners? Did they just get up and leave? Abandoned buildings are fascinating, this book is fascinating. It is worth the read.
