What does the Bible say about marijuana? If it doesn't directly address marijuana, how can Christians know what to make of the legalization of recreational cannabis and the advocacy of medical marijuana?

In the past, Christians could easily answer the question of whether or not it was permissible to use cannabis by deferring to state prohibitions. We could simply say, "it's against the law." Today, that answer is no longer possible. Christians are now forced to do what they should have been doing all along: Think like disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ and bring to bear the wisdom of the sufficient Word of God.

Since cannabis is not explicitly mentioned in the Bible, we must understand what it is and how it affects the user. We also must understand what the Bible says about discipleship, healing, suffering, and what it is to be human. Only then can we answer the critical questions regarding the recreational use and the medical use of cannabis.

In Cannabis and the Christian, Todd Miles gives readers:

  • Biblical wisdom applied to the question of recreational cannabis
  • Biblical wisdom related to the medical use of cannabis
  • A grid to think through other ethical questions that aren't directly addressed in the Bible
  • Confidence to respond to challenging issues standing on the sufficient Word of God

What an extraordinary(and truly necessary) book! This isn't an easy topic to be chatted up and However, WE christians need to be clarified about questions involving this kind of subjects and the biblical vision about it. Strongly recommended, and Well Done to the author.

I have a family member who indulged in weed. It was for recreation; they had no medical need for it. At first, I was supportive because I thought it was more like other issues of Christian liberty: permissible in moderation. It was also legal where we lived. After a few weeks of watching this family member on weed, I changed my mind. It affected them way differently than smoking or drinking did. Even in their attempt to be a moderate user of weed, their behaviors and personality were drastically altered. It was scary. However, I wasn't educated enough to understand what was happening or how to approach the family member to show them what was happening. This book was so helpful in bringing a balanced approach to a controversial subject among Evangelicals. I appreciated the author's work in researching and doing his best to offer a fair, Bible-based assessment of weed in our modern setting. It also helped me approach my family member. They didn't stop using weed, but I was no longer burdened and confused on how to talk with them about weed. I will continue to recommend this book to other Christians and non-Christians.

1,0 de 5 estrelas War on drugs

The author doesn’t address the history of cannabis and, therefore, doesn’t cover the war on drugs (prohibition) from the 1920s onward. The cannabis industry is a social justice movement waiting to happen since it was racism and xenophobia that led the war on drugs and, today, women and bipoc peoples are under-represented in the industry. The author should do his homework rather than stick to views siding with the hatred which caused negative views of cannabis to spread!

Miles has written an excellent, short, and accessible resources for those who want to know what the Bible says about Marijuana. My advice is don’t come to this book expecting it to be pro/against marijuana. Miles is too good and fair of a writer to tackle this issue that way, although he does have clear convictions based upon scripture. He will take you on a journey that will leave anyone feeling challenged/encouraged/hopeful and thinking deeper about Marijuana. Even if you disagree with him, you will respect his process and how he arrives at his conclusions.

I really loved the chapter about discipleship. Although I have never smoked weed and don’t have a desire to do so, I have other things in my life that I run to for comfort, safety, and refuge, to escape stresses, anxieties, fears, etc. But the path of the cross, the path of Jesus leads to life. This book leads me down that path with Jesus who brings joy (113).

Miles last book was about Superheroes (well, actually Jesus), now Marijuana, and I am looking forward to see what’s next!

1,0 de 5 estrelas Outdated information and simplistic views.

The Bible does not explicitly mention cannabis, which makes the book's narrow focus on this substance seem like a missed opportunity and somewhat irrelevant. A more meaningful exploration would involve examining our relationships with various substances in comparison to our relationship with God. This would extend beyond cannabis to include other potentially addictive behaviors and substances, such as sugar (which is clinically proven to be more addictive than opioids) (Ramsay Health Care UK) (Evoke Wellness at Miramar), social media, internet browsing, and more. Instead of focusing solely on self-medication, a more impactful discussion could explore how we can find our way back to God's healing and interact with a world of sin with mercy and understanding, recognizing that we all fall short of God's righteousness.

The research presented in the book is less than sophisticated, with much of the statistical data on cannabis being outdated. One of the central arguments of the book is that cannabis is a Schedule I drug, but at the time of my reading, it was classified as a Schedule III substance, rendering much of the book's content irrelevant. Additionally, the author cites studies dating as far back as 2012, which raises concerns about the currency and relevance of the data.

Moreover, the author relies on anecdotal evidence, such as the opinion of a single budtender regarding the recreational use of cannabis, treating this as an empirical study while dismissing its medical benefits. This lack of rigorous research undermines the book's credibility.

The author appears to lack personal experience or a deep understanding of both Christianity and cannabis, hence the shortcoming in writing a meaningful book that resonates with believers exploring this topic.

Overall, I found this book lacking in both theological depth and rigorous research. I had hoped for a well-researched, gospel-centered discussion, but instead, this book feels like it belongs in the general Christian bookstore without offering significant new insights or hard-hitting analysis.
