Product description
A love story in reverse: How I Met Your Mother is a fresh comedy about Ted (Josh Radnor) and how he fell in love. When Ted’s best friends Marshall (Jason Segel) and Lily (Alyson Hannigan) decide to tie the knot, it sparks the search for his own Miss Right. Helping him in his quest is his bar-hopping “wing-man” Barney (Neil Patrick Harris), a confirmed bachelor with plenty of wild schemes for picking up women. Ted’s sights are set on the charming and independent Robin (Cobie Smulders), but destiny may have something different in mind. Told through a series of flashbacks,Ted recalls his single days, the highs and lows of dating and the search for true love.

The comparison to Friend's is obvious, but if you go deeper than a vauge hand wavey premis, you can see the shows are quite different. This show was made 10 years later than Friends. This means slightly more risque storylines, not so much as to be crass but only to make them truely laugh out loud funny. The way the story is told is also completely different, telling them out of order in flashbacks and fast forwards which only drives them more and leaves you craving for the next bit to piece together the puzzle. The grand arc of the show is driven by the question 'who is the mother' with tantalising hints being dropped all the time (I've seen seasons 2 and 3 as well.) and the more they give you the more you want to know. But at it's very core are a set of great characters who you love and laugh at with equal measure.
I think I've made it clear that I LOVE THIS SHOW. Great plots and characters told in magnificent style. Well worth it.
But after the first few episodes I started to notice the sublime humour, the wit and sophistication of the seemingly basic dialogues, and sometimes wonderfully random and almost surreal comments and reactions. Marshall is my absolute favourite in that respect, with his way of filling an awkward silence by saying "so... fish are weird eh?". Reminds me ever so slightly of Monthy Python, purely because of the randomness and the twisted, abstract humour. If you're not attuned to this type of humour you might not see anything special about How I Met Your Mother. But if you are, you're in for a real treat! I find the jokes and banter absolutely spot on, not too simple, not too complex, and every now and then I hear a line that's so brilliant it's almost... delicious - if you're sensitive to the beauty of spoken word and language in general, you'll know what I mean.
The writing is sharp, varied and very funny, rarely feeling stale, with the main cast excelling with such wonderful material. With much credit going to the writers for creating a piece of television that is both extremely accessible and very smart. And while the main characters are all great in their own right, in the shape of Barney Stinson you will find one of the funniest to ever grace the sitcom.
It is a shame that How I Met Your Mother is generally unknown on these shores, but this should not distract from you giving it a try. As the rest of the reviews about this show here demonstrate, this really is one of American television's biggest gifts to us. If you find out you like this first series, having seen the second and half of the third I'm pleased to report it just as good from here, maybe even better.

It's funny and the characters are likeable. It's a witty, contemporary show that's similar to Friends. A nice way to relax, and the plot isn't very heavy or difficult to follow which makes it good entertainment. This is one of the few shows that actually makes me laugh out loud.
Amazon has this at a great price, and Season One is well worth the $20 (especially if you buy something else to get the free shipping).
