The Unofficial World Cup Album: A Poorly Illustrated Incomplete History Kindle Edition

The greatest moments in sporting history in inglorious technicolour, from the ‘artists’ known as NO SCORE DRAWS

‘Genuinely upsetting.’ David Squires

‘Repulsively ugly.’ Séamas O'Reilly

An Unofficial World Cup Hall of Infamy, featuring the worst fouls, best goals, most questionable refereeing decisions, dodgiest barnets, mintest kits and a host of ‘Where were you when?’ moments.

This is the first (and, let’s face it, probably only) book from the multi-untalented team behind moderately successful Twitter account @CheapPanini, bringing mild bemusement to the world through the medium of wonky hand-drawn stickers.

You can’t fault them for effort, even if they still can’t do hands, so dive into these pages like Roy Keane into a tackle.

Due to its large file size, this book may take longer to download

Product description

Review

‘As someone who has spent/wasted years drawing wonky likenesses of footballers, this book really speaks to me. Sure, one of Mandor Hidegkuti’s eyes has dropped deep and their Mark Van Bommel is genuinely upsetting, but this is a funny and loving collection, as fans of No Score Draws have come to expect.’ David Squires, Guardian cartoonist and author of The Illustrated History of Football

‘An exquisitely beautiful book of repulsively ugly drawings. Come for the terrifying gallery of disgusting freaks, but stay for the humour, nostalgia and sheer unbridled joy it shares for the game, and for sticker books; the holy texts of any football-mad childhood. Essential reading for anyone who's ever picked up a ball, a book, or a marker pen, and thought: "why not?" Well, it replies, this is why…’ Séamas O'Reilly, author of Did Ye Hear Mammy Died?

Praise for the work of ‘No Score Draws’:

‘It’s absolutely awful and I love it.’

‘Will absolutely ruin my partner’s Christmas.’

‘Splendid and horrid at the same time.’

‘Were my expectations met? Sadly, yes.’

If you love football and have even the tiniest sense of humour, trust me - you NEED a copy of this book. Written and painstakingly / painfully illustrated by our witty, warm and self-deprecating heroes, No Score Draws, if you haven’t discovered their work yet you don’t know what you’re missing.Absolutely love these guys ( and can’t wait for their exhibition at the National Football Museum ) P.S…they can’t draw but it just doesn’t matter any more!

When I buy books, especially illustrated ones, I expect a certain level of artistic professionalism. Well Alex and Sian (No Score Draws) have certainly lowered my expectations as these drawings are truly terrible - comically so. I also expect the writing to be informative and serious, especially for a subject as illustrious as the history of World Cup football. But Alex and Sian’s irreverent and comedic prose only serves to align with their approach to their drawings - and in that aim I believe they’ve achieved what they set out to achieve. A book so badly drawn that you laugh at the pure wonkiness; only to be further tickled by their comedy writing.

I’ve followed No Score Drawers for a while and was completely hoodwinked into parting with actual money for this book. Mainly because I felt sorry for them. But also mostly because I love what they do and this is a really excellent result of their continued hard work!

Please buy the book. They might actually get better if they’re asked to do another one.

No, no... when you do that with books, like when my so called mate said awful things about the Unofficial World Cup album, and when you do things like that about people like No Score Draws, I've kept really quiet, but I'll tell you something, he went down in my estimation when he said that.

I’ve not not resorted to that, but I'll tell you, you can tell him now if you're reading it, I’m still fighting to finish reading this book, and he's got to go to Waterstones and get something, and... and... I'll tell you, honestly, I will love it if I finish this book, love it!

The horror, the horror. I am smashed face-first against an abstract rendition of a horse. Men’s eyes look at me from impossible angles throughout and Diana Ross has just missed a penalty but the goal frame breaking has somehow ruptured my now ink- and paper-based pancreas. I have made a Faustian bargain without being at all cognisant of the dire consequences. Buy this book. Release me from my pain.

Art is subjective, but great art is sensual, evocative, captivating, breathtaking, and full of painstaking attention to detail.

You’ll find none of that here.

What you will find is sausage fingers, sometimes as many as seven to a hand, a worrying amount of teeth, haircuts only a gardener could threaten, large eyes and small eyes - often on the same face.

Can’t wait for the next book!

Don't let the artwork fool you - this is a hilariously-written book which had me laughing out loud for the most part. Oh, and there are many, many wonderful World Cup hairstyles on show here which, let's face it, is what the World Cup is really all about. The phrase 'hirsute somnambulist' is also used in this book to describe a player, and that was almost worth the price alone.

After reading this book I spent a long time looking at my hands. It was fascinating. My hands have loosely (very loosely) the same proportions as those on the pages before me. Same number of fingers. Then it hit me... Alex and Sian obviously don't have ANY fingers or hands of their own. Having realised this... I think this book was a pretty good effort.

A wretched, debasing experience. The depiction of the Battle of Santiago is probably only slightly less painful than actually being in it. There are many respected footballers in here who will no doubt be consulting their lawyers to determine if some of the images are actionable. A European Cup book must surely, horrifyingly, follow this dark temple of despair.

Commendable, if bad, efforts are still entirely entertaining, and perhaps even educational. Best to have a good laugh about badly drawn sports than crying about the state of the world—more of this!
