The inspiring, life-affirming memoir from Nicola Nuttall about her incredible daughter Laura

When Nicola Nuttall was told that her 18-year-old daughter Laura had only 12 months to live, following a diagnosis of the most aggressive form of brain cancer, glioblastoma multiforme, she couldn’t begin to process her emotions. It was her greatest fear come true.

But while her mother struggled to adjust and searched for new treatments, Laura made a decision: she would live her life to the full and embark on an extraordinary bucket list.

Meeting Michelle Obama, piloting a Royal Navy ship, sky diving, going on safari in South Africa, driving monster trucks, taking tea at the Ritz, dancing on stage in front of thousands and graduating from university were just some of the many adventures Laura undertook.

The Stars Will Still Be There is Nicola’s raw but beautifully written account of helping her daughter make the most of her remaining time, while dealing with her own pain along with that of her younger daughter Gracie and husband, Mark.

This is a heartbreaking, life-changing memoir that reveals the fragility of humans, the power of love and why we should all ‘Be More Laura’ every single day.

No words can ever do this book justice. I cannot recommend it highly enough to anyone who is grieving a loved one, experiencing a similar journey with a terminal illness diagnosis to Laura or just anyone who is wanting to support a friend through a tough time. Nicola’s emotional words and the wise words of her daughter Laura are truly inspiring. It is one of the most beautifully written books I have ever read. I’m not ashamed to admit that I sobbed, I also laughed and felt the parallels in Gracie’s grief for her sister. As I’ve said, no words will do this book justice, please just read it. #Be more Laura

Having followed Laura’s story for the last few years, I knew I had to pre order this when I seen it flash up on twitter.

I could not put this book down and finished it , empty packet of tissues in tow. I’m absolutely blown away and have no words that will do it justice for how brilliant it truly was. What a raw, heartbreaking yet heartwarming book which made me laugh, cry and realise the importance of living in the now. You could sense from her mums words what a lovely inspiring person Laura was and now in turn the kindness and selflessness of Nicola, Mark and Gracie. It really made you think and realise the importance of living in the now. Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed and I hope life is a little more gentle for this wonderful family as they deal with the worse loss imaginable whilst also campaigning and raising awareness for other people affected by this horrific disease.

This is a wonderful book. Raw, honest and full of love, Nicola documents Laura’s journey brilliantly; her incredible daughter shines through the pages. I could barely read the last pages through tears and can only imagine the Nuttall family’s grief and pain at the loss of their beloved Laura. Their determination and commitment to improving research and outcomes for brain cancer patients is remarkable, and it’s clear that Laura’s legacy and memory will be kept alive through their sterling efforts. Bravo, Nicola, I’m in awe of you, Gracie and Mark ❤️ Laura was clearly such a wonderful, remarkable and kind girl and I’m so, so sorry for your loss xxx

I don't think that any review will do this book justice. I was diagnosed with a brain tumour a couple of years ago, and I found reading this raw, personal and honest account of the impact of cancer on a family incredibly moving and powerful.

I could not put it down (even though I of course wished I could change the ending that I knew was coming). It is amazing to read about Laura's life - she and her family are truly inspirational. If you are reading this review, please buy this book - it is such an important story to read, and will change the way you live your life.

Thank you to Laura and her amazing family for all the important work that you have done for the brain tumour community - you are incredible.

From the heartbreaking lows to the joyous highs; this book will take you down a path that no parent ever wishes to tread. But by reading about Nicola's experience (and that of her family) we can learn huge life-affirming lessons.

The book is beautifully written. Nicola bravely shares the raw, painful moments that left me emptying the tissue box on more than once occasion. But as well as the expected darkness, the book is littered with humour and joy. I genuinely laughed out loud at many of the anecdotes of the two Nuttall sisters growing up together.

This book has truly shifted my mindset. Why are we all waiting for tomorrow when there is so much to be experienced and appreciated today?

This book should be mandatory reading for all. I will treasure my copy forever.

A few years ago I saw that Sophie Raworth, BBC newsreader (and keen runner) had retweeted a post from a friend whose daughter had aggressive brain cancer and had a bucket list to fulfil. From that day I followed Laura's story via her mum's account. Like many or most of Nicola's followers I was hoping for a miracle. Sadly that never happened, but there's no doubt that Laura lived her life to the full and experienced far more than others do in a much longer lifetime.

This is her story and is a thought provoking read. It lays bare the impact of cancer on the rest of the family, especially Laura's sister, and also highlights how little money is spent on brain cancer research, despite it being the number one cause of death by cancer in under 40 year olds.

Please read this book and donate to the Be More Laura Foundation or another brain tumour charity if you can.

What an incredible, moving, absolutely heart shattering read! As a brain tumor patient, and sister of a young brother lost too soon to GBM, I’m in awe of Laura’s family’s courage and how much they were able to squeeze out of life in such little time. We should all aspire to living with the courage and grace of Laura and her beautiful family!
