Revolting!: How the Establishment are Undermining Democracy and What They’re Afraid Of Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

A short, sharp intervention in the crucial debate about the future of democracy, which has been brought to a head by events from Brexit to the Trump phenomenon.

In response to the emerging 'I'm a democrat, but...' consensus, this audiobook will argue for a forthright defence of democracy against its enemies and critics, old and new. As part of that argument, it will aim to show that the problem has not been too much democracy but too little - the absence of real political choices about the future that has stoked the popular mood of antipolitics.

I found the author's summary of the history of democracy an excellent study of the perceived advantages and problems and this sets the scene for the analysis of the establishment's view and motivations. One has to ponder whether the EU will implode into revolution if it continues to deny democratic accountability and insist on a path of supra global state and abolition of the nation state. The epilogue is an excellent summary and conclusion to the arguments put forward in the book. It is a reminder of what I studied many years ago when people like Bernard Crick was proposing the Reform of Parliament and In Defence Of Politics. At that that time we had a new hope that democratic processes would thrive. Now I'm not so sure. The establishment, experts, special interest groups, EU and even the celebrity world seems to have been allowed to subvert our democracy. Thank you so much for such a thoughtful book.

An excellent little book which sets out the vital need for social democracy with a big D. Hume starts by setting out the means by which liberal elites instruct their 'inferiors' in a top down manor. Such elites have contempt for popular democracy and the demos whilst at the same time fearing it. Hume then outlines the long struggle to achieve democratic rights such as voting and how such rights have been resisted by those in power. he then describes the EU project in all its undemocratic glory. If I have a slight criticism it is that while Hume rightly praises Tony Benn's courageous role in resisting the steady loss of democratic rights to the EU he does not mention Peter Shore's role. Pity. But I thoroughly enjoyed the book andf have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone interested in democracy today.

The author is editor at large for online magazine Spiked. If you are familiar with Spiked, you will have a pretty good idea what to expect. This little book is a clear and passionately argued polemic against the EU (mainly) and in favour of more democracy.

In the future Revolting! may be referred to as 'The Little Yellow Book' - a work that gets to the heart of everything that is going wrong today in Western politics and reactions to "undesirable" democratic outcomes like Brexit and Trump.

The principles and reputation of democracy is under attack and this book is a much needed counterbalance to the distortions we are being fed every day through the mainstream media and our "betters", in politics.

Written in a lively and engaging style, Revolting! is the medicine needed for our current confusion and political malaise. Ignore the negative reviews coming from elitist biases. Their arguments could not hold water in an open and rational democratic debate!

I cannot recommend this book enough. Buy two and give one to a friend.

Coming after the Brexit vote and Trump election win, this book is up to date and relevant.
For me as a Brexit voter, it confirms rather than challenges my views on sovereignty and democracy. For someone on the other side of the argument, while it may or may not change their viewpoint, it provides some insight into the way the majority were thinking last June.
A very readable and well thought out argument, in my opinion. I wish I could express my (similar) viewpoint with such clarity!

I enjoyed this book and it made me think differently about some of my own views, however I did find it quite 'negative' on some of the arguments. This may seem obvious when the author is arguing against but it didn't seem quite right when they continue on the ideas and principles of 'experts, free press and making up your mind'. I did agree with a lot mentioned and made me think differently. Good read

Aimed at the general reader, in an engaging style, this polemic offers a different perspective on the issues involved in Brexit, Trumpism and "post-truth politics". Hume argues cogently for democratic ideals as the compass point progressives should align towards at a time when all the mainstream political philosophies seem to be broken.

Hume permits himself some political shorthand in his accounts of key events, which may annoy those interested in the nuances and details of each, but as a digestible tour of the path democracy has taken, how the people have driven it forwards at every step, it's a helpful story for anyone trying to work out which way is "up" in a chaotic political landscape.

There are a number of books on a similar theme that ordinary citizens are pretty dim and need to be lead by those who have power, special interests and be in a position of influence in government. With the decline of organised religion, many in power believe that they fill a moral vacuum in society. Human nature is a constant however, regardless of political fads to the left or right. This is why referendums are so frightening to our rulers and they bring out the unpredictabity of human nature. This book brings this out in a readable fashion.
