The Illustrated History of Football: Hall of Fame Kindle Edition

‘A fresh look at the beautiful game’ - NME

Welcome back to the
inimitable work of illustrator David Squires.

Most football fans can only dream of pulling on the shirt of their favourite team and running out in front of thousands of adoring fans. Pitch invaders aside, few of us get to experience that adrenalin rush. Of those who do make it as a professional footballer, even fewer realise the giddy heights of success.

In the Illustrated History of Football: Hall of Fame, cartoonist David Squires returns to celebrate those who straddle the game like giants; those talented, determined souls who were juggling tennis balls in the back streets before they could talk.

There’s more than one way to attain football immortality though, and Squires also turns his comic eye to the mavericks, the pioneers, the forgotten legends and the anti-heroes. From Pele to Meazza, Maradona to Socrates, you will be taken on an unforgettable journey through the good, the bad and the Hagi.

Love this artist/writer, Squires is great and creates work perfect for any football fan. Even with this book now being a smidge out of date, it's still very good and full of intelligent satirising of football tropes. S adly, despite buying this new, the cover is torn. If it was for me I could live with it, but it's frustrating when you are buying something for someone as a gift and it arrives damaged.

Every single thing David Squires does is brilliant. Subscribe to The Guardian - it’s worth it just for his weekly contribution.

The man is a genius.

M Ore writing than I’d expected, but my grandson was delighted with it. He hates reading!

Brilliant.

Not 'as good' as his first in that it didn't make me crack up laughing as much but still fantastic and the back stories, research and usual attention to detail are unsurpassed in this genre.

Please ensure we get a book every year from now on.

How about The Illustrated History Of Football Derbies? I bet there's plenty of content there.

Which reminds me, I haven't checked the usual Tuesday cartoon!

David Squires has done it again, with another superb collection of cartoons and writing about football. Most of the entries have a very funny page of text followed by a page with the strip on, with some bigger names warranting extra pages of drawings. And, my word, is it funny. Funnier then that time David Batty and Graeme Le Saux had a punch up while playing for the same team. The section on Eric Cantona is worth the price alone. Squires clearly loves the game and his attention to detail is remarkable, I had to put the book down (a) because I was laughing too much and (b) because I didn't want it to end. A great gift for anyone with even a passing interest in football, an absolute must for true footy fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just wonderful

David Squires is a genius, it’s as simple as that. Only he knows how he comes up with his comic strips but each and every one is uniquely superb. This book is a collection of factual write-ups on various historical and more recent footballing legends, each of which is followed by a brilliantly-random comic strip about said legend. No review can truly do this book justice but if you like football stories with a bit of humor thrown in, check it out.

Excellent follow up to the first illustrated history of football. This one is more suitable to core football fans who spend hours thinking about the reasons they hate/love the tiki-taka football and the actual worth of Troy Deeney's cajones on a Monday night at Brighton
