The Covert Narcissist: Recognizing the Most Dangerous Subtle Form of Narcissism and Recovering from Emotionally Abusive Relationships Kindle Edition

Still struggling from the effects of a narcissistic or psychopathically abusive relationship?
Many people do and sadly there is very little information available to be found online or in the written research, or with counsellors and therapists that can help. Narcissistic Victim Syndrome is not officially recognised, nor is it widely even known.
Even when it is accepted, recognised and known not many people seem to know what to DO ABOUT IT to heal it… The fact is being in a relationship with a narcissist over a long period of time has long lasting traumatic effects that can be extremely catastrophic to the person suffering them.

DO THE FOLLOWING SYMPTOMS SOUND FAMILIAR?

- Ruined self confidence
- Doubting yourself and your sanity
- Mood swings
- Sleeplessness
- Extreme weight loss or weight gain
- Uncharacteristic jealousy/ insecurity
- Feeling like you don’t know the difference between right and wrong
- Extreme paranoia (being turned into an obsessive detective)
- Endless, repetitive obsessive thinking about your ex
- Constantly trying to find explanations for what has happened
- Feelings of helplessness and despair
- A desire to self isolate
- Feeling desperately misunderstood
- Overwhelming feelings of loss and grief
- Extreme bouts of rage
- An inability to be comfortable with yourself
- Strange dreams

The list goes on….

“NOBODY UNDERSTANDS!”
I hear this frustrated cry from abused people a lot.
I felt the same way when I was recovering from emotional abuse at the hands of a narcissistic/borderline psychopath. If you try and tell people who have NO EXPERIENCE with a narcissist (there is no experience like being with a narcissist, its not their fault they can’t understand) about it they will either deny your experience, tell you you are exaggerating or look at you like you were crazy.

Covert Narcissists dangle their vulnerability in front of you as bait, just waiting for your good nurturing mothering/fathering instincts to kick in and rescue the poor little lost child they are presenting to you.
But beneath the mask of a shy, vulnerable and “good person” something far more sinister lurks.
And this what makes covert narcissism so damaging and dangerous: the nature of the disorder is such that you are brainwashed into thinking you are dealing with a human being with a morality, perhaps even a “pillar of the community”.

OFT REPEATED MYTHS OF THE INTERNET ABOUT NARCISSISTS :

You are Told
: Narcissists are always brash, loud, assertive, flashy and Confident.
The problem is: Coverts are quiet, insecure and passive.

You are Told: Narcissists will never apologise for things they do.
The problem is: Coverts can learn that a quick and TOTAL apology is a really slick way of getting their target to “go back to sleep” if it looks like they are waking up.

You are told: Narcissists can be detected because they will always tell you how amazing they are and by bragging about their achievements.
The problem is: Coverts are known for presenting themselves as vulnerable victims who can even use that vulnerability as a hook to bait you in!

WHAT YOU NEED NOW:

- Someone who has been through the same experiences you have and understands them from the inside.
-Someone who has the knowledge, training, education and experience working on himself and others to lead you through the emotional sh*tstorm that breaking with a narcissist can create.

Absolutely spot on, very helpful and enlightening.
After many years of abuse I was left in turmoil, chaos, and guilt after my husband committed suicide. So many questions but no answers……..until now.
I appreciate this book as it is informative, easy understanding language, and uplifting. I feel that I for the first time get things straight and understand what happened and why. I feel positive that I can start my healing journey.
Thanks!

I have read many books on narcissism but this particular one I have found to be the most helpful. It explains how Covert Narcissists think and why they do what they do and this book explains this in a very straight forward way allowing you to really understand who you are dealing with. After being in a relationship with a covert narcissist, when I am ever doubting why I had to leave the relationship, this book will be my go to. Thank you Theresa, this book has really helped me and will do so going forward in my recovery.

I was in two minds on if I should buy this book or not but I decided to buy it anyway and I’m so glad that I did, as a survivor of narcissistic abuse, I wondered what other information I would find within the pages, and boy did I find a lot, my ex is a covert narcissist and this book has 100% cemented that fact, thank you for writing such a helpful book, I would highly recommend.

Genuinely loved this book. Completed it in a day and felt very validated reading it. It was like my entire experience was in the pages, like my own memoir. Only critique I can offer is the concept of “forgiving them”. I know it’s very nuanced but I would never forgive the person who abused me. Out of the whole book of gold, this was the one thing I struggled with but still very highly recommend.

I have learned a lot from this book, about both myself and about the covert in my life. I am still on my journey to escape this painful chapter in my life but I feel stronger and more determined than I have felt in a long time. I’m still scared but know that I can and will face my fears and get away. Thank you for writing this book, it really has been more than just a read to me it has been and will be life changing. Would definitely recommend it to anyone who like me suspects that they are living with a “covert” and wants to break free from them.

The Rebecca Review
5.0 out of 5 stars A Comforting and Well Written Guide to Understanding Covert Narcissism!
Reviewed in the United States on 6 August 2023
Dr. Theresa J. Covert has written an intriguing book about how covert narcissists get under the radar and give you what you want so you are easily fooled. The emotional detachment later in the relationship is very chilling! As is the silent treatment.

Some of the questions this book answers include:

Why am I letting the narcissist isolate me?
What are the red flags to watch for early in the relationship?
Why should you understand the three stages of a relationship with a narcissist?
What are the effects of narcissistic abuse?
What happens when your suppressed anger comes to the surface after you realize the full situation?

This book will teach you some things that other books on narcissism don't cover because this is about covert, not overt narcissism, except there are some overlaps.

The end of the book is a compassionate look at recovery and there are some useful tips on dealing with narcissists you can't fully get away from no matter how much you wish you could!

This book has been edited and is extremely well written in a friendly style. It also feels comforting to read because you will feel the author may have firsthand experience. She talks about narcissism from the viewpoint of a survivor! At least I think she has at least talked to people who have survived and moved on with their lives.

Please consult with a professional if you have any questions or concerns. I am not a doctor, nor is this a review by a psychologist. This review is not medical advice.
