It's hard to find a good IR remote that works well with Linux and doesn't require going through a proprietary service.
Fortunately there is a "python-broadlink" module that supports controlling devices of this kind. I had to wait a couple of months until the module included support for this device, then I had to learn enough python to get it actually working—to connect to it, to read IR codes from my remotes, and to repeat them back on demand.
The hardest part was getting it to connect with my wifi network. I eventually had to go through the broadlink app to get it signed in, and it seems there is some bug in either the device or the app that forced me to simplify my wifi password before it could connect. Not good there.
But once it did, I was able to set it up to control several devices of mine, particularly my AC and overhead fan-light. The output is strong and steady, and does what I need it to do. It just sits in the corner taking requests, and has so far never failed to do what I expect of it.
I have also still kept my Broadlink app account, and configured controls in it for these same devices. I find it limited in the feature support it has for some of them, and I hate the log-in procedure, but overall it works, too, and I can make sure the lights are on and AC is running before I get home.
