Evacuation and financial supports

  • Evacuation payments – how to apply

    • Albertans who are part of a mandatory evacuation order for 7 or more days may be eligible to receive a one-time payment of $1,250 for each adult and an additional $500 for each child under 18.
    • Anyone who left their community voluntarily, but who were not part of a mandatory evacuation order, is not eligible for payment.
    • Residents of Little Red River Cree Nation, Garden River community can apply for emergency evacuation payments starting on July 17, 2024.
    • Residents are encouraged to apply online at Evacuation payments, evacuationpayment.alberta.ca.
    • Residents who have left the area can access any local Alberta Supports office from 8:15 am to 4:30 pm for assistance applying for an emergency evacuation payment. Find Alberta Supports office locations at alberta.ca/alberta-supports.
    • In-person applications will be also accepted from 10 am to 8 pm in High Level at the Best Western Hotel (9616 AB-58) and at John D’Or Prairie School on July 17 and 18.
  • Evacuation payments – eligible communities

    Starting July 17, 2024, residents of the following communities can apply for emergency evacuation payments:

    • Little Red River Cree Nation
    • Garden River
  • Emergency financial assistance

  • Insurance information

    • Contact your insurance representative if you have questions about your insurance coverage during the wildfires.
    • The Insurance Bureau of Canada has updated information about insurance during wildfires. Albertans affected by wildfires can visit their web page for information on property and auto insurance or contact their Consumer Information Centre:

    The Municipal District of Opportunity has declared a state of local emergency and issued an evacuation order for residents of Chipewyan Lake. About 89 residents have now evacuated. Extreme heat will continue to drive significant wildfire activity in the coming days.

    Extreme heat and increased fire activity in northern Alberta triggered an evacuation alert for the hamlet of Janvier and First Nations reserve Janvier 194. Residents are asked to be prepared to leave on short notice. The number of active wildfires in Alberta continues to climb with extreme fire danger throughout much of the province.

    Residents of Garden River who have been evacuated for seven days or more can now start applying for one-time emergency evacuation payments. Increased fire danger and activity have led to 47 new wildfire starts in the past 24 hours and there are currently 128 active wildfires burning in Alberta.
