Crews pulled a Georgia man from Little River Canyon late Sunday after he fell approximately 40 feet from the top of Little River Falls in DeKalb County.
According to the National Park Service, the incident happened at about 6:30 p.m. within Little River Canyon National Preserve.
Multiple agencies from DeKalb and Cherokee counties responded.
The victim, a 21-year-old from Trenton, Ga., was walking along the top of the falls when he fell.
A bystander contacted a park employee that was in the area, and National Park Service (NPS) Law Enforcement Rangers and other park personnel responded to the scene.
Fischer Rescue Squad, Fort Payne Fire, volunteer fire departments from Adamsburg and Broomtown, as well as DeKalb Ambulance Service assisted.
The man, whose name was not released, was found at the base of the falls on a rock ledge. A technical rescue system pulled him the top of the falls, and he was airlifted from the scene for medical care.
“The Park Service would like to remind visitors to be vigilant with their personal safety and the challenging terrain in and around Little River Canyon,” the agency said in a news release. “The park is a natural environment that poses inherent risks and can be dangerous. We urge visitors to utilize caution when in the park.”
