Automated access to Redstone Arsenal restored after traffic-snarling computer glitch

Access to Redstone Arsenal was slowed Tuesday due to a computer system failure that has been resolved, according to a spokesperson for the installation.

The glitch affected all of Redstone’s five open gates, which usually allow automated access for authorized vehicles. Drivers had to manually show ID to gain entry, which led to traffic delays at access points around the facility. Posters on the arsenal’s Facebook page wrote about mile-long traffic backups on Rideout and Martin roads.

“Redstone Arsenal maintains redundant security checks to ensure installation access, which we employed today,” Public Affairs Director Lisa Simunaci said in an email to Al.com. “The situation is now resolved. We appreciate the community’s patience as we remained vigilant in our security measures.”

The arsenal is the largest employer in the Huntsville region, responsible for up to 38,000 direct jobs.
