In some parts of Alabama, groceries are dealing with bare shelves due to a prolonged bout of winter weather.
This week’s frigid temperatures, along with one round of snow and two rounds of ice, have blanketed North Alabama roads with a treacherous film. Travel in some parts is being heavily discouraged, which can make for slim pickings at the store.
Consider that some stores dealt with the usual panic buying of milk, bread and eggs, along with other vital needs, at the first mention of snow earlier this week. Then replenishing those stores became problematic in some areas with the continued condition of major highways.

Bare shelves are not the case for everyone, though. Big Star in Russellville, for example, has had a truck every day, according to an employee.
“We’ve been very busy,” he said.
At Muscle Shoals Foodland Plus on Woodward Avenue, shipments of groceries are continuing, though new supplies from individual vendors are seeing some momentary trouble.
Good news for everyone: Temperatures are expected to rise next week, if you can wait a little bit longer through the weekend.
Lows tonight into Saturday morning will be in the single digits in north Alabama and the teens and 20s elsewhere. By Wednesday highs will be in the 60s statewide, and lows will be warmer than today’s highs, in the 40s and 50s.
