Territorial Sea Baselines along Ice-Covered Coasts: International Practice and Limits of the Law of the Sea2004 •

The sedimentary record of the glaciated margins of the North Atlantic holds evidence of past ice-sheet activity, and reflects spatial and temporal variations in the ice– ocean–climate interaction as well as the influence of tectonic processes. Furthermore, the record of cross-shelf ice sheets provides a direct link between the continental ice cover and the deep ocean, a relevant issue in the context of climate research. With a four-year funding period, a Marie Curie Initial Training Network on the Glaciated North Atlantic Margins (GLANAM) was started in the spring 2013. The network involved international partners from both academia and industry and enrolled 15 young scientists working in different areas of the North Atlantic margins. The Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland was partner in the network, leading the Greenland margin research and hosting three fellows. One of the main topics of the GLANAM project was to investigate the impact of the ice sheets on the large-scale e...

Geology of Greenland Survey Bulletin, 176, 9-16. https://doi.org/10.34194/ggub.v176.5054 _______________ The former Geological Survey of Greenland (Grønlands Geologiske Undersøgelse: GGU) was to have celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1996. The ministerial reorganisation and the establishment of a Ministry of Environment and Energy led directly to the merger in 1995 of GGU with its much older relative, the Geological Survey of Denmark (Danmarks Geologiske Undersøgelse: DGU). This larger institution, also with headquarters in Copenhagen, but with roots going back to the last century, had already celebrated its 100th birthday in 1988. DGU, as well as serving the sovereign country Denmark, had ...

A new ice thickness and bed data set for the Greenland ice sheet 1. Measurement, data reduction, and errors2001 •
Study of Greenland Ice Sheet elevation change using the ERS-1 (1992-1996) and ERS-2 (1995-1999) satellite altimeters was performed. The spatially variant inter-satellite bias between ERS-1 and ERS-2 measurements was revealed and determined. The bias increases from interior to margin areas causing the spatially averaged error of elevation change rate estimation about 6 cm/year. The spatially averaged elevation change rate from 1992 to 1999 amounted 4,3 cm/year growth, or about 3,8 cm/year if isostatic uplift of underlying bedrock is taken into account. The time series of elevation show its apparent seasonal and inter-annual variability and indicate a minimum in 1995 especially revealed over the southern areas of Greenland. Over whole time period considered decrease of elevation it typical over margin, where higher air temperature and summer melting are observed. At the same time, the interior region of the northern part of Greenland reveals an insignificant but stable growth.
