THE ROUTLEDGE HISPANIC STUDIES COMPANION TO MEDIEVAL IBERIA
THE ROUTLEDGE HISPANIC STUDIES COMPANION TO MEDIEVAL IBERIAThis chapter will offer a complete survey of Hispanic narrative on the subject of chivalry. It will start with an introduction describing the rise and development of European medieval chivalry, and how it became a fictional subject matter for romances and other literary works. El libro del Cavallero Zifar will be the starting point for the study of Hispanic romances, and the transformation of a heroic warrior to a courtly knight. The second section will survey the arrival and presence of Arthurian tradition in the Iberian Peninsula, and how it was also combined with Carolingian and Greek traditions, besides folk-motives in the Hispanic romances of chivalry in the late Middle Ages and the early Renaissance. In a third section, I will analyse chivalric motifs and the narrative resources which define and characterise this literary genre. Amadís de Gaula and Las sergas de Esplandián will be both the late medieval romances which provide episodes and examples for the aforementioned analysis. I will also would like to present, in a late and final section, the development of medieval romances of chivalry, their enrichment and great development during the Golden Age of the Spanish Literature, thanks to the diffusion provided by the printing press, and the medieval mind set that led the Conquest of America.
