In Memoriam

Ivy B. Elkins of Evanston, Illinois, an advocate for lung cancer research and for patients with the disease and a member of the AACR, died June 23, 2024.  She was 57.

Nathan A. Berger, MD, founding director of what is now the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) in Cleveland, Ohio, and a member of the AACR since 1978, died June 14, 2024. He was 83.

V. Craig Jordan, PhD, DSc, FAACR, a pharmacologist and a pioneer of hormone therapy for the treatment of breast cancer, died June 9, 2024, at the age of 76.

Lynette Ann Denny, MD, PhD, an AACR member, former head of department of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Cape Town (UCT) in South Africa, and a leading researcher in the prevention of cervical cancer in low-resource settings, died June 9, 2024. She was 66.

Connie J. Eaves, PhD, OC, a Canadian biologist whose work on hematopoiesis and stem cells provided insights into the biology of leukemia and breast cancer, died March 7, 2024, at the age of 79.  She was a Fellow of the AACR Academy.

Edith P. Mitchell, MD, an oncologist, the enterprise vice president for cancer disparities at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center (SKCC) in Philadelphia, and a retired brigadier general in the U.S. Air Force, died recently at the age of 76.

Judith Campisi, PhD, an expert on the link between aging and cancer through cellular senescence at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging and a Fellow of the AACR Academy, died January 19, 2024, after a long illness.

Bonnie F. Sloane, PhD, former chair of the Wayne State University (WSU) School of Medicine Department of Pharmacology and a longtime member of AACR, died December 24, 2023, at the age of 79. She held the rank of distinguished professor of pharmacology and was also a distinguished professor at the Barabara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit.

AACR member, Nora Navone, MD, PhD, professor of genitourinary medical oncology at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, died December 15, 2023. She was 70 years old.

Worta McCaskill-Stevens, MD, former chief of the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Community Oncology and Prevention Trials Research Group and director of NCI Community Oncology Research Program, died November 15, 2023, at the age of 74.

Cullen M. Taniguchi, MD, PhD, a radiation oncologist at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, died November 15, 2023. He was 47 years old.

Sharon B. Murphy, MD, a pediatric oncologist and clinical cancer researcher who was a longtime AACR member, died November 4, 2023, at the age of 80.

Lee Roy Morgan, Jr., MD, PhD, a retired clinical pharmacologist and oncologist and an AACR member for 58 years, died October 22, 2023. He was 86 years old.

Franklyn G. Prendergast, MD, PhD, emeritus professor at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science who was the first Black director of an NCI-designated cancer center, and a longtime member of the AACR, died October 12, 2023, at the age of 78.

Gerald Litwack, PhD, a retired professor of biochemistry, a prolific author, and a longtime member of AACR, died September 29, 2023, at the age of 94.

Michael R. Speicher, MD, a longtime AACR member who was professor and chairman of the Diagnostic and Research Institute of Human Genetics of the Medical University of Graz in Austria, died September 24, 2023, at the age of 62.

Charles B. Kasper, PhD, a retired cell biologist at University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a longtime member of the AACR, died September 5, 2023, at the age of 88.

Peter G. Scholefield, DSc, PhD, a longtime biochemistry professor and cancer researcher in Canada and a member of the AACR since 1964, died September 1, 2023, at the age of 98.

Irwin H. Krakoff, MD, a pioneering oncologist and cancer center leader, died August 9, 2023, at the age of 100.

David S. Alberts, MD, a pioneer in cancer prevention research and a longtime member of the AACR, died July 29, 2023, at the age of 83.
