CleanSlate knows addiction is hard. Their approach to THC use is made with their patients in mind.

As the way we think about treating people with opioid use disorder (OUD) or alcohol use disorder (AUD) changes, so do our rules about THC (that’s the stuff in cannabis or marijuana). We’re talking about why it’s okay for some people getting treatment to use THC a little bit, doesn’t hurt their recovery and isn’t problematic to their life and functioning. Medical studies continue to support a non-punitive approach to THC use for patients in recovery for opioid or alcohol use. CleanSlate’s approach supports their patients by respecting the progress already made in recovery and addressing any challenges they might be facing.

When a patient at CleanSlate tests positive for THC, it’s an opportunity for our medical staff to have a conversation about their overall health.

That includes how they are feeling mentally and physically, and if THC use may be disruptive to their life and recovery. Our addiction treatment professionals focus on the patient’s main goals, working together to build a plan that fits our patients’ lives and unique needs. Our approach to THC use helps patients succeed in their recovery on their terms.

Here’s What’s Different Now

  • Making It Individual: Testing positive for THC while in treatment does not necessarily mean you will need to visit our centers more frequently. Instead, it’s an opportunity for you to have a conversation with your provider about your THC use and assess your individual needs and concerns.
  • Looking at the Big Picture: We look at everything going on with your treatment, not just whether you used THC. We’ll discuss how you’re doing in therapy if you are supported with a counselor, how you are feeling physically, and if you’re using anything else. This helps us understand the best way to support you.
  • Working Together: If our team recommends making an adjustment to your treatment plan because of THC, we will talk about it with you first. This way, everyone is part of the decision, making the plan together for your long-term, sustainable recovery.
  • Being Supportive, Not Penalizing: Our approach is all about helping, not making things harder for you. We want to make sure that THC is not another substance that any patients become dependent upon, but also do not want to penalize patients if THC is not disruptive to their life and successful recovery.

The Path Forward

Our approach to THC use in treatment means we’re getting better at helping everyone in their own way. We know that each person’s road to feeling better is different, and we’re here to support each person on that journey to long term recovery.  It’s all about making sure the care we give is as unique as each individual who walks through our doors.
