MOUNT VERNON, Ind. (WFIE) - At the regular Board Meeting this evening, the MSD of Mt. Vernon hired Charles “Rocky” Alderman to lead the girls basketball program. In addition, Coach Alderman will teach mathematics at MVHS.

With first-hand knowledge of how winning programs are built, Alderman was tabbed to bring those areas of expertise to the Wildcat Program. For the last 5 years, Coach Alderman has been the assistant boys basketball coach at Washington under the legendary Head Coach Gene Miiller. As Miiller’s assistant coach, he not only learned how a successful program works, but he has been an integral part of that success in developing and assisting year-round workouts beneficial to player growth and development. For the past 2 years, he has also been a junior high girls volleyball coach.

Outside of Hatchet Basketball, Rocky Alderman has been embedded in DistinXion: A Zeller Family Program. The DistinXion C.H.A.M.P.I.O.N.S. Program is designed to be a player development program that prepares players for their next steps in basketball and in life. While at DistinXion, Coach Alderman has been a Basketball Service Intern, Junior Leader Intern and On-Court Camp Director, Basketball Development Coach and has experience in leading film sessions through his work as a Program Video Coordinator.

Prior to that, he started working with the Uncommon Sports Group which has provided him with experience as a missionary worker while also working as a volunteer with other young coaches at clinics and conventions for coaches across the USA.

While attending the University of Evansville, he was under the direction of Head Coach Marty Simmons while serving as the Head Student Manager for the Men’s Basketball Program. During that time, according to Coach Simmons, Rocky was much, much more than a manager: gym / practice preparation, practice drill assistance, downloaded and distributed scout film to the coaching staff, assisted the UE Director of (Basketball) Operations, in addition to many more jobs that were given to him.

Through his many experiences, Coach Alderman has developed a well-rounded philosophy which he will bring to the Mt. Vernon Girls Basketball Community. “I’m excited to begin my head coaching career at Mount Vernon and have an opportunity to teach our girls to compete in one of the best basketball conferences in the state.

As a coach, and also as a math teacher, I hope to have an impact on the young people in Mount Vernon showing them how to become the best versions of themselves to become leaders in their community.” Offensively, he will look to push the pace “with a purpose” while working for great shots. Defensively, he looks to instill an aggressive defense that works to hold opponents to a single shot.
