Syntagma a.k.a. Constitution square is the most central area of Athens. The Parliament building is the centre of political life of the country, and the square is well known for the cafeterias which attract large numbers of visitors. Busy and full of life, this neighborhood extends towards Monastiraki, including many excellent hotels, famous shopping street Ermou, small affordable restaurants and cozy cafes for snacks, drinks and coffee.

The Numismatic Museum on Panepistimiou street is interesting to visit, with the collections of coins and medals going back to ancient times and the National Historical Museum offers a wide view of archives and historical documents from the more recent history of Greece. On Filellinon street visitors can see the Russian Orthodox church and St Pauls Anglican church. The temple of Olympian Zeus and Emperor Hadrians Arch are the most important ancient monuments in this area. The National Garden is ideal for a restful walk in natural surroundings.

Valaoritou pedestrian street is just two paces form Syntagma square and is famous for the chic cafes, amongst which Brazilian is a favorite. Hip on Mitropoleos street offers great coffee and light meals and Olymbos Naousa on Perikleous street is great value for money, with traditional Greek cuisine. Tzitzikas and Mermigas on Mitropoleos and Mono on Benizelou street are ideal for casual dining. For a quick snack to nibble while walking, Ariston cheese pies on Voulis street are unbeatable.

Nightlife centers around Karytsi square, which abounds in fashionable bars and cafes, amongst which Cashmere, Black Duck and Toy cafe are favorites. City lovers enjoy the cool nights sitting on the sidewalk or on terraces with a drink, music and good company. Horostasio attracts a bohemian crowd with rock music and laid back atmosphere and Shakespeare is the place to see and be seen by the fashion crowd. Sixx on Amerikis street is very popular in winter months.
