Route 7 hit-and-run suspect waives preliminary hearing

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The driver charged in a deadly crash that occurred on Route 7 near Morgantown last month has waived his preliminary hearing.

David Blaine Emerson, 28, of Morgantown, is accused of speeding and wearing no seatbelts when state troopers attempted to stop the car. Troopers said Emerson crossed the centerline with police pursuing and hit an ambulance traveling in the opposite direction.

The impact killed a woman in Emerson’s vehicle. The force of the collision split the car Emerson was driving in two, investigators said.

Emerson fled the area but was captured later in the day at a home on Pixler Hill Road.

Magistrate Sandy Holpet rejected a defense motion Monday to reduce bond from $250,000 to $10,000 and place Emerson in a drug treatment center.

The case is now transferred to Monongalia County Circuit Court, where the charges will be presented to a grand jury in September for possible indictment.
