According to meteorologists, heat index values of more than 105 degrees are expected in Kanawha, Cabell, Boone, Clay, Logan, Lincoln and Putnam counties.

“The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely,” the Weather Service said. “Higher heat index values will be observed in urban areas and low-lying valleys this afternoon.”

The heat advisory issued by the weather service is for counties roughly from the southern coalfields to the northern panhandle west of the West Virginia Turnpike and Interstate 79 corridor.

Heat index values of around 104 degrees are expected in the counties covered by the heat advisory.

“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors,” the NWS said. “Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.”
