West Virginia inmate sentenced to 40 years in prison for second-degree murder of fellow inmate

FAYETTE COUNTY, W.Va. — A Mount Olive Correctional Complex inmate has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for second-degree murder.

55-year-old Charles Redman, of Mount Olive, appeared before Circuit Judge Thomas H. Ewing on Monday, where Ewing passed down the sentence in connection to the November 2020 murder of another Mount Olive inmate.

Video surveillance from the facility showed that Redman and the victim were seated at a card table when the victim walked around the table and sat beside Redman. Redman attempted to punch the victim while both were seated, and soon after, the victim walked to a hallway a floor up in the facility.

Redman followed the victim to which he then approached and stabbed him multiple times. Surveillance also shows that the victim at no point was the aggressor.

The weapon Redman used appeared to be made out of metal and measured at eight inches long.

Redman confessed to the killing during a recorded phone call to a relative.

Redman was serving a 15-year-to-life sentence in relation to a repeat offender conviction from Berkeley County.

Judge Ewing ordered that the most recent 40-year sentence be served consecutively to the prison term currently being served by Redman.
