Both West Virginia basketball programs learned of their Big 12 Conference opponents Thursday for the upcoming 2024-25 seasons with the 16-team league releasing its schedule matrix.
On the men’s side, each league member is slated to face five teams twice in a home-and-away format, five teams once at home and five teams once away.
For women’s teams, there will be three home-and-away opponents, six home only foes and six road opponents.
The West Virginia men will face Big 12 newcomer Utah twice, along with BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and TCU.
The Mountaineers men’s team will welcome fellow newcomers Arizona and Arizona State in addition to Central Florida, Iowa State and Oklahoma State.
A home matchup with the Utes allows former longtime West Virginia staff member Josh Eilert to return to the WVU Coliseum, while ex-Mountaineer and current Cowboys’ forward Pat Suemnick can do the same.
In Darian DeVries’ first season as head coach, WVU will travel to Colorado during the Buffaloes’ first year back in the Big 12. The Mountaineers will also play at Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State and Texas Tech.
Coming off a season in which it advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, the WVU women’s team will take on Cincinnati, Colorado and Oklahoma State in home-and-away contests.
In what will mark Mark Kellogg’s second season as head coach, the Mountaineers will welcome BYU, UCF, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State and Utah, while traveling to Arizona, Arizona State, Baylor, Houston, TCU and Texas Tech.
Opponents were selected based on a combination of geography, historical results and a poll of the coaches to best balance the schedule in terms of travel and competitiveness.
A full Big 12 schedule will be released in the future.
